Treatment of Rectal Tenesmus in Ayurveda
The treatment is usually given for the underlying cause of tenesmus in modern times. The underlying causes like ulcerative colitis in which there is increased frequency of bowel movements, simple diarrhoea due to some unsuited food articles, chronic constipation due to lack of fibre in diet etc. for all of these conditions the treatment which is given is following:
- Drugs to suppress the autoimmune process like azathioprine.
- Laxatives to relieve constipation
- Antimotility drugs like in diarrhoea and many others
- Proton pump inhibitors for accumulation of gas regularly
Ayurvedic Correlation
If we discuss or understand this condition according to the Ayurveda then it is the result of excessive vata accumulation in the digestive tract. Due to this aggravated vata dosha prickly pain is really common. Aggravated vata when moved in a downward direction then enhances the feeling of defecation even when there is no stool in the bowels. The aggravation of vata usually takes place due to blockage of its path due to aggravated pitta resulting in pratiloma gati of vata dosha (movement of vata dosha in the opposite direction). So the Treatment is given to subside the symptoms and to pacify pitta dosha initially.
