What is Honeycombing ?
Honeycombing is considered as the end stage of interstitial lung diseases which is characterized by airspaces and cysts of diameter varying from few millimeters to few centimeters while airspaces range from 5-10mm covered with fibrous walls of thickness 2-3mm. High-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) or chest X-ray provides the appearance of enlarged respiratory bronchioles producing cystic airspaces like a honeycomb-like structure. This condition can be divided into two types i.e. Micro cystic honeycombing and Macro cystic honeycombing.
What Causes Honeycombing ? (ما الذي يسبب العسل)
Honeycombing is mainly caused by a diversified group of diseases like Idiopathic interstitial pneumonia, asbestosis, interstitial granulomatous, interstitial lung disease, and diffuse alveolar damage. These conditions come under a wide group of diseases known as interstitial lung diseases (ILD).
Interstitial Lung Diseases (ILd)
These are a group of diseases caused due to inflammation and fibrosis of lung parenchyma. Some factors that may lead to this condition are certain environmental factors, previous medication or autoimmune/connective tissue disease (CTD) and accumulation of chronic inflammatory cells (lymphocytes and macrophages). These conditions can directly or indirectly result in honeycombing of the lungs. Some of the conditions that may be categorized under this group are-
- Idiopathic interstitial diseases
- Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF)
- Non-specific interstitial pneumonia (NSIP)
- Interstitial pneumonia
- Sarcoidosis and asbestosis
