Treatment of Eruptive Syringoma in Ayurveda with Herbal Remedies
Abstract
Skin is the largest tissue of the body and is the body’s covering which is soft, flexible, and elastic and helps in protecting the underlying tissues, blood vessels and nerves from the blunt trauma, corrosive liquids, effects of harmful radiations. The skin consists of multiple layers that include epidermis (the outermost covering), followed by basement membrane which overlies above dermis and subcutaneous fat. Further, there is the presence of few other associated structures that include pilosebaceous unit which comprises hair follicle along with hair shaft, the arrector pili muscle and the sebaceous gland, along with eccrine and apocrine glands. Under the influence of some hereditary or environmental triggering factors there is the formation of the lesions or benign tumors that arise from these pilosebaceous structures and apocrine and eccrine glands. One of such tumors is Syringioma. In this article we are going to discuss a specific variety of syringoma i.e. eruptive syringoma along with its possible causes, clinical features and best possible Ayurvedic formulations for its management.
Introduction
Syringoma is a benign adnexal tumor which is derived from acrosyringium i.e. the intraepidermal eccrine sweat ducts. The transitional potion of the dermal duct and lower acrosyringium is believed to be the origin. These benign lesions are more frequent in young women predominantly during puberty or during the 3rd or 4th decade of their life. Eruptive syringoma is a rare variant of the syringoma and was first described in 1887 by Jacquet and Darier. This disease is characterized by small, reddish lesions that occur in successive crops on the anterior body surface particularly over the anterior chest, neck region, upper abdomen, axillae, and around the umbilical region.
Sign and Symptoms
Few common clinical manifestations of Eruptive syringoma include the appearance of multiple small, disseminated yellowish lesions in atypical sites, there is bilateral symmetrical distribution of papules on the affected sites, there is pain, intense itchiness and redness in the affected areas of the skin.
Causes
The exact cause of this disease is not known but the overproduction of sweat from the sweat glands is the main reason for the disease. In rare cases, there are hereditary factors associated with the syringoma formation that are triggered by any environmental factor or disease such as diabetes, marfan’s syndrome, down syndrome or Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. Any such activity which aggravates the productivity of the sweat glands, can lead to the growth of these benign tumors.
Ayurvedic Aspect
Various skin diseases in Ayurveda came under a broad term of kushtarog (skin disorder) and these diseases are believed to be caused due to vitiation of tridosha with the predominance of pitta dosha vitiation. The main body tissue involved in this is rakta dhatu (blood tissue). This disease i.e. Eruptive Syringoma is considered as the kshudra kushta arised due to the vitiation of microchannels/ ducts associated with sweat (sved vaha srotas dushti).
(Reference- Charka Samhita Vimana sthana 5/7)
meda (subcutaneous fat) and lomkoop (sweat glands/ducts) according to Acharya Charka. This vitiation of sved vaha srotas due to underlying cause will lead to the deformities in meda and lomkoop, and will lead to the formation of these benign tumors/lesions under the influence of vitiated tridosha.

Conclusion
As mentioned earlier, Eruptive syringoma is a rare disease. And there is no exact treatment of it with the Allopathic medicines, they just rely on steroid based topical applications or oral steroidal medications for the management of the disease which on long term use can damage the skin and other body tissues or have hazardous side effects on the multiple systems of the body. Whereas the Ayurveda focus on treating the disease from its root cause with the use of herbal medications along with life and dietary modifications. Ayurveda is the best holistic approach for the treatment of patients suffering from eruptive syringoma in a relatively more effective and safer way.
