Introduction
Cutaneous larva migrans is a skin disease which is caused by infestation of larvae in the human skin. These larvae are a type of nematode parasite of the hookworm family. Basically these parasites live in the intestines of animals such as dogs, cats and other wild animals. There is a creeping eruption on the skin as larvae migrate under the skin’s surface. Humans get infected with these larvae by direct contact with contaminated soil or water.
Etiology/Causes
This disease is caused by contaminated soil or water. Eggs of hookworm are shed in the infected dog or other wild animal feces to the soil or water. They develop over a period of 1-2 weeks into the infectious larval form which is known as filariform larvae. Then these filariform larvae can burrow through the skin that comes in direct contact with contaminated soil or water. They create the typical worm like burrows underneath the skin.
