Treatment of Cherry Angioma in Ayurveda with Herbal Remedies

ABSTRACT

Cherry Angioma is known as cherry hemangioma which is a small bright red color dome shaped bump on the skin. This is due to abnormal proliferation of the blood vessels and has no relationship to cancer. Blood vessels are the components of the circulatory system which transports blood throughout the human body. They help to transport the blood cells, nutrients and oxygen to the whole tissue of the body. Blood vessels are needed for sustain of life  as all body functions rely on these functions. There are three types of blood vessels: Arteries- they carry blood from your heart, veins carry blood towards the heart, Capillaries are the smallest blood vessels which further connect arteries and veins. The main function of blood vessels is to deliver the blood to the whole organs and tissues, and also carry waste products carbon dioxide away from organs and tissues. The main artery is the aorta, which connects the left side of the heart, it usually runs down the chest, abdomen and to various branches in the area. The main vein is vena cava, It carries blood from head, neck and arms and inferior vena cava is present near the right side of the diaphragm. They are tube-like shapes which run in the straight line. Blood vessels are made up of three layers- Tunica Intima, Tunica Media, Tunica adventitia. In humans, the number and functions are affected by various diseases and conditions such as- Inflammation, atherosclerosis which involves the deposition of fat and causes abnormal increase in the blood pressure.  In this topic we are going to study in detail about its causes, symptoms and its ayurvedic aspect and various remedies provided by planet ayurveda.

INTRODUCTION

Cherry Angioma are the moles of skin growth which can develop anywhere on the body known as Senile angioma, Campbell de Morgan spots. A cherry angioma is a bright red color, circular oval shaped bump on the skin. They can often grow on torso, arms, legs and on shoulders. It increases as the age increases, and is usually a harmless benign tumour which contains an abnormal proliferation of the blood vessels seen in adults over the age of 30 year. Bleeding can occur if any of the angioma is scratched, rubbed and cut open. It is usually light to dark red in colour. They are benign growth which can be confused with melanoma and with moles. It can also appear on scalp with varying size from diameter of 1-2 millimetres and looks like a dome with a flat top. It was first described as a benign skin condition by British surgeon Campbell de Morgan in the 19th century considered harmless and non cancerous which affects 50% of the adults.

FACTS

• It can grow anywhere in the body commonly on the head, neck and torso.
• Mainly seen in older age and usually pop up after the age of 30 years
• They can be removed by cosmetic surgery.
• Are reddish brown in color and essentially made up of blood vessels.
• When the venules get dilated they become red and swollen which further break down the venules so visible on the surface of skin known as Cherry angioma.
• It usually varies in size from tiny dots to several millimeters in diameter.
• They resemble skin cancer as they are formed due to clustering of blood vessels on the skin but are not dangerous.
• Cherry angioma are signs of age, certain medical conditions, chemical exposure and certain climatic conditions.

CAUSES

• Cherry angioma occurs through two different mechanisms- Angiogenesis (it is the formation of new blood vessels from pre-existing vessels), Vasculogenesis (formation of totally new blood vessels).
• Chemical exposure (topical nitrogen mustard, bromides)
• Pregnancy (prolactin hormone)
• Regulation of nucleic acid suppresses the growth of proteins which causes vascular growth.
• The level of microRNA 424 reduces the senile hemangioma resulting in increased protein expression of MEK1 and cyclin E1.
• Somatic mutation in GNAQ and GNA11 genes are seen in cherry angioma.
• Increased density of mast cells.

SYMPTOMS

• Bright red color growth or mole on your skin
• Round and oval in shape
• Smooth and flat dot in their initial stages
• Differs in pinhead size to a quarter of an inch in diameter.
• Bleeding and swelling and sometimes the signs of irritation
• Multiple adjoining angiomas form a polypoid angioma
• Bright red colour is due to dilated capillaries

TREATMENT

• Cryosurgery is freezing of angioma with liquid nitrogen and extreme cold will destroy it.
• Laser Surgery it involves using a pulsed dye laser to get rid of the cherry angioma
• Shave excision- is removing of the angioma from the top portion of the skin by using stitches, sutures to close the wound
• Electrodesiccation is the electrocautery which burns off the skin growth.

AYURVEDIC MANAGEMENT

As per ayurveda cherry angioma is due to aggravation of pitta and rakta dushti. Rakta dhatu is more than blood, is the carrier of the fire which freshens up the mind and body. When rakta dhatu is in excess, heat in the body increases and tissues of the body feel inflammation. When rakta dhatu is deficient the heat of the body decreases and tissue becomes inflamed, when heat builds up in the body, moves through vasodilation to the blood surface. When blood tissue is contaminated by various doshas and aam it causes many diseases, and contamination of pitta and blood in blood vitiated disorders are seen. As blood and rakta have ashraya ashraya relationship. Due to blood and pitta vitiation skin loses its immunity and causes excessive congestion and inflammation and gives rise to pigmented disorders. When there is contamination in ranjaka and bhrajaka pitta the mols, freckles and other skin disorders are mostly seen.

HERBS USEFUL FOR CHERRY ANGIOMA

1. KUTKI

Kutki (Picrorhiza kurroa) is very useful in chronic fever, skin disorders and used as a purgation procedure. It is usually used to pacify the pitta and kapha doshas. It performs various activities such as anti diabetic, hepatoprotective and as an immuno modulatory property. Kutki works as a laxative, as liver stimulant (in higher dose works as a purgative) and as a cholagogue. Helps in relieving the intestinal worms and in weight loss treatment.

2. MAKOY

Makoy (Solanum nigrum) is used in treatment of vitiligo , nausea and in various diseases as in oral cavity and in headache. Makoy used as a tridoshagna (used to reduce all the three doshas) act as a cell and tissue rejuvenation. Induces mobility which causes diarrhea and helps to relieve constipation. 3. KALMEGH

Kalmegh (Andrographis paniculata) is used in the treatment of liver , skin, fever and is used in purification of the blood. Helps to reduce the vitiated kapha and pitta doshas. Kalmegh stimulates the liver and helps to let out the pitta out of the body, has bitter pungent so used in skin disorders. Helps to promote digestion and appetite, used as antioxidant herb.

4. KAASNI

Kaasni (Cichorium intybus) is used in insomnia, fever and weakness due to cardiac muscles. Helps to reduce the vitiated kapha and pitta doshas. It helps to manage the gall bladder stones by expelling them and has pitta balancing properties. It helps to manage various skin disorders and acts as an antioxidant. Improves the appetite and helps in digestion, and has anti-inflammatory properties.
