Transient Ischemic Attack: Ayurvedic Treatment, Causes, Symptoms
Abstract
Healthy blood circulation is very essential for the proper functioning of every part of the body. Blood circulation is responsible for the delivery of appropriate levels of oxygen in every cell of the body. Any disturbance in this phenomenon will lead to presentation of various abnormalities in the body. One such condition that results in depleted circulation is the transient ischemic disease. There is a brief period of time where the brain is not receiving appropriate levels of blood, the condition of transient ischemic attack is a very severe condition and it will be described in detail along with its causes, symptoms, ayurvedic aspect, etc. in the following article.
Introduction
The Transient ischemic attack is also known as a mini stroke. The blood circulation is hindered or blocked for a brief moment of time and it is rapidly restored. This may last for two to thirty minutes. This condition may last for just a few minutes but the short term duration of this state should not be a judging criteria for its severity. The incidence of TIA (Transient ischemic attack) can be an early sign of brain stroke. The difference is that unlike the brain stroke, the brain tissue does not die in TIA (Transient ischemic attack) due to the rapid restoration of the blood supply in the affected area. This condition can have various presenting features which will be described as follows but before that, let’s try to know the cause underlying the condition of TIA (Transient ischemic attack).
Causes
There could be a variety of reasons that may lead to the condition of TIA (Transient ischemic attack). The causes will depend and vary from patient to patient. But the most common causes are explained as follows. The condition of atherosclerosis leads to narrowing of arteries as there is fatty matter build up on the walls of the artery. This faty material, if accumulated in the small blood vessels of the brain, can lead to TIA (Transient ischemic attack). The increased blood pressure levels can also land the patient in TIA (Transient ischemic attack). There can be various other factors also such as spasms in the arterial walls, cerebral artery stenosis, etc. The patients of severe anaemic, carbon monoxide poisoning or polycythemia (abnormal clotting) are also at a very high risk, as this will lead to either low oxygen levels or formation of clot inside the blood vessels respectively. This condition will present various kinds of symptoms that need to be identified to protect the patient from lethal consequences.
Symptoms
The various presenting features can vary from person to person. The most common ones are described as follows. The patient may experience a sudden episode of numbness or weakness. It can affect any part of the body such as face, arm, leg and usually either side of the body. He/ she may experience confusion or may suddenly face trouble in speaking. The patient may experience different troubles in vision in one or both eyes. He/she may also complain of sudden dizziness or loss of coordinated movement. During the episode of TIA (Transient ischemic attack), the patient may suddenly experience a severe headache with an unknown cause. In about one third of the cases of TIA (Transient ischemic attack), the patient suffers a stroke , usually within a year of the first attack. This condition of TIA (Transient ischemic attack) needs proper and timely diagnosis to prevent the further consequences.
Diagnosis
There could be various conditions such as seizures, tumors, migraines, etc. that can be confused with the condition of TIA (Transient ischemic attack), to differentiate and diagnose the correct scenario, a few diagnostic tests would be required. There can be various ways to confirm the diagnosis, the imaging techniques may include the transcranial doppler (TCD), MRI (magnetic resonance imaging), CT (computed tomography) angiography, etc. The confirmed diagnosis will pave the path for the beginning of the treatment. Let’s discuss the line of treatment according to the modern and ayurvedic principles of medicines.
Treatment
The proper treatment would first require a confirmatory diagnosis as described earlier. The first step after the diagnosis is to strictly restrict the unhealthy diet and lifestyle such as smoking, alcohol, etc. The management of risk factors is done such as in hypertensive patients, blood pressure should be maintained within normal limits; in diabetic patients, blood glucose levels should be brought back to normal limits, cholesterol levels should be maintained, etc. So, the cause needs to be identified and eradicated. If the TIA (Transient ischemic attack) occurred because of the presence of a clot in the blood vessels, then anticoagulants should be given. This is the line of treatment according to the allopathic point of view. The ayurveda presents a very unique perspective on the condition of TIA (Transient ischemic attack) which will be described as follows.
Ayurvedic Aspect
As the modern perspective of TIA (Transient ischemic attack) is explained earlier, the ayurvedic approach to deal with this condition will be to rebalance the dosha in their natural levels. The equilibrium of the three dosha (vata, pitta, kapha) are known to be the pillars of a healthy body. The vata dosha is said to be responsible for the movements in the body and also for the normal functioning of the nervous system. In the condition of TIA (Transient ischemic attack), the main aim of management will be to improve the blood circulation to minimize the chances of clot formation.
Balancing the vata dosha will improve the strength of the nerves and the brain. To accomplish this goal and restabilise the dosha in their normal levels , various ayurvedic herbal preparations such as arjuna capsule, ashwagandha capsule, punarnava capsule, gotu kola capsules etc. can be used. These formulations will be described in detail in the following content.
