Abstract
It is a neurological disease caused by inflammation of the brain (encephalitis) and is called SSPE. This disease can be caused by the reactivation of the measles virus or by inappropriate immunity to the measles virus. In 1933, Dawson described a condition he called “inclusion body encephalitis’ ‘, which is subacute encephalitis with loss of neuronal cells and the appearance of Cowdrey A inclusions in neurons and glial cells. Van Bogaert (1945) reported a similar disease in which white cerebral lesions showed fibrillary gliosis with distinct subacute inflammatory infiltrates, which he termed “subacute sclerosing leukoencephalitis’ ‘ described the same disease and stated that it was due to measles. Introduction
Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) is a serious, disabling, and fatal neurological disease associated with measles (rubella). This disease occurs years after measles. It is also called Dawson disease.
Causes
In most cases, measles does not cause brain damage. However, weak immunity against measles or some variants of the disease can lead to serious illness and death. This response causes inflammation in the brain that can last for years. Although SSPE is reported all over the world, it is a very rare disease in Western countries. SSPE usually occurs years after the person has had measles, even if they seem to have recovered. Men are affected more than women. This disease usually occurs in children and adolescents.
Pathogenesis
The exact pathogenesis of SSPE is unknown, but some evidence suggests that the lysis of neurons or oligodendrocytes is induced by the antibody and not by the direct effect of the virus.
Symptoms

- Mild cognitive impairment (e.g., memory loss)
- Some people will go blind.
- Insomnia

Diagnosis

Treatment
There is no cure for SSPE, but treatment usually aims to control symptoms. Some antibiotics and drugs that support the immune system can be used to slow the progression of the disease.
Prognosis
There is no fix for this. Patients with this disease die within 1-3 years after diagnosis, although some patients may survive longer with medication.
Prevention
The measles vaccine is the only known vaccine for SSPE. The measles vaccine is very effective in reducing the number of children affected.
