Significance of Molecule C60 in Medicine Science Or Are There Any Relevant Ayurvedic Herbs?

ABSTRACT

C60 (Carbon 60) is a molecule made up of 60 atoms of carbon. These atoms form a shape like a soccer ball. It was primarily used in electronics and nanotechnology. C60 is a powerful antioxidant and potential for anti-aging effects. Antioxidants help the cell to protect from free radicals. It is a potential therapeutic agent because of its carbon cage structure. C60 can easily fit in the hydrophobic cavity of HIV. It inhibits access of substrate to the catalytic site of the enzyme. In this review, we will discuss the significance of molecule c60 in medicine science.

INTRODUCTION

In recent years, there’s been increasing interest in the health effects of fullerenes particularly known as carbon 60 (C60). It is made up of 60 carbon atoms. Because of these atom bonding, C60 interacts with free radicals in the environment giving the molecule strong antioxidant properties. Antioxidants reduce oxidative stress in the body. Many people take C60 as a supplement. For this reason, it is also put in anti-aging skin care products. There are 20 hexagons and 12 pentagons present at the surface of C60. There is extreme conjugation of double bonds. C60 is very difficult to process and it is a big hurdle in its medicinal application. C60 is a synthetic molecule derived from graphite in the lab. Carbon forms a new bond by the evaporation of graphite.

Molecule C60

USES OF C60 MOLECULE

According to the Researchers, There are Various uses of C60 including

  1. Viral Infections
  2. Oxidative stress
  3. Sunburns
  4. Radiation protection
  5. Amyloid plaques in the brain
  6. Allergies
  7. Stimulates the immune system against cancer and promotes healthy hair growth.
  8. It fights with free radicals like superoxide in the body.

Antiviral Activity

C60 is a potent antiviral activity and has proven to be very effective in HIV infections. Its mode of action is based on various biological factors including its unique structure and antioxidant properties. The C60 cage provides an Antiviral structure against HIV(P).

Fullerenes as Antioxidant

Fullerene possesses a large amount of conjugated double bonds. The major advantage of fullerenes as a medical antioxidant is their ability to localize within the cell to mitochondria and other cell compartment sites wherein diseased state, the production of free radicals takes place.

Photosensitizers

Photoexcitation of fullerenes is a potential medical application. Fullerenes can be excited from the ground state to C60 by photoexcitation. These short-lived species can be easily transformed into long-lived C60 through intersystem crossings. In recent studies, it is found that the photodynamic activity of fullerenes is derivatized with a hydrophilic and cationic group against a range of mouse cancer cell lines. It is found that monocationic fullurenece is a highly effective photosensitizer for killing cancer cells.

TYPES OF FULLERENE

1. BUCKMINSTERFULLERENE

Buckminsterfullerene is the most common form of fullerene. It exists in the form of C60.

2. LINKED BALL AND CHAIN DIMER

Two buckyballs are linked by a carbon chain in this type of fullerene.

3. NANOTUBES

These forms of fullerene are hollow tubes of very small dimensions, having simple or multiple walls. These play an important role in the electronic industry.

4. BUCKYBALL CLUSTERS

These forms of fullerene are the smallest form of the fullerenes group. Its structural formula is C20. These fullerenes are the unsaturated version of dodecahedra.

ADVERSE EFFECTS OF C60

According to a review, it was found that C60 isn’t toxic in humans as well as animals. Human and animal studies show that there is an uncommon side effect on the application of C60. Though more research is needed on this. There isn’t enough reliable information to know if carbon 60 is safe or what the side effects might be. When it is applied to the skin it is found possibly safe when it is used for up to 8 weeks.

RELEVANT AYURVEDIC HERBS

As there is no direct correlation of molecule C60 found in Ayurvedic texts. As per its properties, we can correlate this with various Ayurvedic herbs. Molecule C60 is an artificial chemical compound and still, there are some ill effects that can be seen. Below mentioned Ayurvedic Herbs are quite relevant to C60:-

  1. SPIRULINA CAPSULES
  2. BRAHMI CAPSULES

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

1. SPIRULINA CAPSULES

Planet Ayurveda’s Spirulina Capsules are made from a standardized extract of spirulina. This product contains only spirulina (Spirulina platensis). It contains high pH and carbonate concentration which provides energy to the body and supports the growth of the cells. It is considered the best nutritional supplement because of its Antioxidant properties. It can protect against oxidative damage. It can fight with free radicals and blocks the production of molecules that promotes inflammation. Studies indicate that spirulina can lower triglycerides and improve cholesterol levels which may support heart health. This product also helps in meeting the overall nutritional needs of the body.

Dosage:- 1 capsule twice daily with plain water, after meals.

2. BRAHMI CAPSULES

Planet Ayurveda’s Brahmi Capsules are made from a standardized extract of Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri). It is famous for supporting the health of the neurological system of the body. This herb has cold potency and is found in marshy areas of  Asia. As per Acharya Charaka, Brahmi is considered one of the four medhya rasayan (Neurological supplement). Brahmi leaves contain proteins that act as an antioxidant. It is found to be neuroprotective and effective in Alzheimer’s disease. It may help lessen ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder).

Dosage:- 2 capsules twice daily with plain water, after meals.

3. ASHWAGANDHA CAPSULES

Planet Ayurveda’s Ashwagandha capsules are single herb formulations made from the standardized extract of Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera). It helps in sustaining good neurological health. It balances all three doshas but mainly pacifies vata and kapha dosha. It is proven to be effective in reducing stress and anxiety. It is a worthwhile supplement for athletes. Moreover, it also increases sperm motility and concentration in men. There are some shreds of evidence that show it tends to reduce inflammation in the body.
