Pulmonary Eosinophilia(Lung Disease), Natural Treatment, Causes

Abstract

Eosinophilic lung disease is a group of lung problems, this Eosinophilic lung disease is a condition where white blood cells that are also named eosinophils get raised in number. White blood cells are responsible for developing our immune system, they are responsible for fighting off all the allergies or various harmful chemical reactions, and several infectious diseases. Pulmonary Eosinophilic lung diseases are a diverse group of lung diseases, associated with tissue or blood eosinophilia. They are generally of unknown causes such as simple pulmonary eosinophilia, allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis, acute or chronic eosinophilic pneumonia, parasitic infections, idiopathic hypereosinophilic syndrome, eosinophilic vasculitis etc. In Ayurveda, these diseases mainly occur due to the kapha prakopaka nidana, and they start hampering the shwas vaha srotas, which ultimately results in the shwas roga. In this article we are going to discuss pulmonary eosinophilia, its symptoms and management from an Ayurveda perspective.

Pulmonary Eosinophilia

Introduction

Pulmonary eosinophilia also named as Loeffler syndrome, that is a rare and transient respiratory systemic disease, occurs because of the accumulation of eosinophils or white blood cells in the respiratory system. Most commonly this disease developed due to the allergic reactivity to any medicine or infections. This condition ranges in severity in every individual some may concern without or have very mild symptoms and some may come with severe symptoms. When this disorder occurs with mild symptoms then it may not need any medication/ therapy or the person may go with the enhancement of the immune system as we can say that this condition is a benign and self-limiting disorder.

Causes – this condition is not caused by any specific etiological factor.

Pulmonary eosinophilia can be classified into primary or secondary from external causative factors. Primary pulmonary eosinophilia can occur as idiopathic in nature, and secondary occurs due to external factors.

Primary Eosinophilia may develop due to

  1. Acute eosinophilic pneumonia
  2. Chronic eosinophilic pneumonia
  3. Hypereosinophilic syndrome

Secondary pulmonary eosinophilia may develop due to

  1. Allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis
  2. Any ongoing medication
  3. Radiation effects
  4. Parasitic infections
  5. Any benign or malignant condition.

Symptoms

Take a full evaluation by knowing all the acuity and chronicity of the symptoms, like trying to evaluate the history of asthma, ongoing medicines, any infectious symptoms, and any kind of occupational or environmental exposures.

  1. Initially, this condition usually presents with mild lung infection characterised by dry, wheezing sound, unproductive cough, or some degrees of fever with malaise (feeling of tiredness).
  2. Some patients may feel pain in the chest, dyspnoea or shortness of breath, and increased breathing rhythm.
  3. In a few people, the persistence of mucus mixed with saliva occurs while coughing.

These symptoms may resolve on their own without taking any kind of medication.

Diagnosis

  1. Diagnosis can be made by auscultating the patient’s chest. You may hear a crackling sound, which can also be named rales that directly means your lungs are in an inflamed state.
  2. A complete blood count test may show raised eosinophils in white blood cells.
  3. Infiltrates can be seen in the chest X-Rays that are like abnormal shadows, they may see in different areas in the lungs.
  4. Bronchoscopy.

Treatment

  1. Check if you are allergic to any medicine that you are taking for any other underlying condition.
  2. Antibiotics or anti-parasitic medications, and corticosteroids can be given by your allopathic practitioner.
  3. In Ayurveda this condition is correlated with pranavaha srotas dushti. This occurs due to the vitiation of all the doshas but predominantly by Kapha dosha. The chest region is the aashraya of Kapha dosha, when it becomes dushit then the patient may feel persistent cough, mucus with sputum, heavy breathing, and sometimes chest pain also.

Conclusion

This condition is a type of lung disease. The increased number of eosinophils is a characteristic feature of this problem, as we already know white blood cells are the part of the immune system, they fight off several infections, but when they raised they may cause eosinophilic pneumonia, hypereosinophilic syndrome, allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis etc. The percentages of eosinophils in peripheral blood and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid are essential parts of the evaluation. In most of the patients no management is required and the condition gets resolved on its own. Wheezing, coughing, sputum may subside by time or can be managed by home remedies like hot water steaming by putting 2-3 drops of tulsi drops in boiling water. So we can say that by enhancing our effective immune system with Ayurveda medication can help us to get rid of various types of diseases.
