With Ayurvedic medicines also the management of prosopagnosia is possible. So let’s move further and enlighten ourselves about Prosopagnosia.

Prosopagnosia

Introduction

So let’s start with the definition of Prosopagnosia. Prosopagnosia is a condition which is kept under the category of cognitive disorder. The name prosopagnosia is taken from greek words that is Prosopon which means face and agnosia means non knowledge. The condition is also termed as face blindness. It is a cognitive disorder of face perception that means in this condition the ability to recognize familiar faces, including one’s own face (called as self recognition) is impaired, while the other functions like visual processing and intellectual functioning (Decision making) remains intact. The condition can be the result of acute brain damage or simply can be congenital as well. The brain area usually associated with Prosopagnosia is called a fusiform gyrus. This area is specifically activated in response to faces.

A little detail about Fusiform Gyrus and Prosopagnosia

The function of fusiform allows most people to recognise faces in more detail. In the case of Prosopagnosia, The method of recognition of the faces depends on the less sensitive object recognition system. There are two hemispheres of the Fusiform gyrus, right and left. The right hemisphere is more involved in familiar face recognition than the left. This fusiform gyrus is also called the occipito temporal lobe whose damage results in acquired prosopagnosia.

What is the difference between Acquired & Congenital Prosopagnosia

The acquired prosopagnosia develops with age but the congenital one is present from the birth and in congenital types of prosopagnosia patients have a lot more difficulty in developing face recognition than in acquired type. The acquired prosopagnosia results from damage to the occipito temporal lobe which is commonly found in adults.

The acquired prosopagnosia has two subtypes that are Apperceptive and associative prosopagnosia. The appreciative type of acquired prosopagnosia involves disorientation in the right occipital temporal region whereas in associative prosopagnosia there is impairment in the functioning of parahippocampal gyrus.

So, that’s how both of the prosopagnosia differ from each other. Now let’s further discuss about the causes of prosopagnosia

Cause of Prosopagnosia

Prosopagnosia has the following causes:

  • Lesions due to injury in various parts of inferior occipital areas.
  • The inferior occipital area are generally involved in the early stage of face perception
  • In acquired prosopagnosia, it develops as a result of  several neurologically damaging causes. Vascular causes include posterior cerebral artery infarcts and hemorrhages in the infero medial part of the temporo occipital area. These hemorrhages can  be bilateral but if they are unilateral then only belong to the right hemisphere.

But if the causes are understood from the angle of Ayurveda then this condition typically specifies aggravation of vata dosha in the body resulting in brain damage and hemorrhages in the right hemisphere. The vascular infarcts are also the result of vata dosha aggravation. Vata aggravation is disturbance or disbalance in the kinetic energy of the body. Once the kinetic energy of the body is disturbed then all the motor functions and motor functions taking place due to external stimulus can get hampered.

Diagnosing Prosopagnosia

There are certain tests which are done so as to diagnose this condition. One of such famous tests is the face test, where the affected individual is asked to recognize faces of famous persons.

Another test used by neuropsychologists is the benton facial recognition test which is used to assess face recognition skills.

Ayurvedic Aspect of Prosopagnosia

As mentioned above, the condition arises due to aggravated vata dosha and thus the occipital region is affected resulting in derangements or lesions or infarcts. The prime reason for the aggravation of vata dosha is not following proper diet and lifestyle.

Ayurveda suggests that intake of cold, dried, frozen food which is mainly bitter, astringent and pungent in flavors influences the aggravation of vata dosha. On the other hand, food articles which are sweet, salty and sour flavored help in balancing the aggravated vata dosha. The imbalance in the kinetic energy also results in vishama agni thus causing irregular digestion and leads to nutritional deficiencies as well. In lifestyle the main causes of aggravated vata dosha are not sleeping on time, stress, doing physical activity more than your body’s capacity.

In Ayurvedic texts it is also mentioned that it’s better to avoid the nidaan that are the wrong diet and lifestyle habits and routines only then the patient can get better. The things work well in case of acquired prosopagnosia but in case of congenital prosopagnosia the vitiation of vata dosha takes place inside the womb and thus the occipital region is affected of the fetus giving rise to derangements and face blindness starting from the birth. So, it is very important for a mother to take care of what she eats and what she does in her pregnancy.

Ayurveda is a holistic science and works through the process of natural healing instead of suppressing the functions of hormones or any metabolic or catabolic functioning going on inside the body. The process of natural healing is sustainable and only demands positive changes to be done in your diet and lifestyle. With a positive mindset, healthy diet and lifestyle along with natural and effective supplements any problem in the world or any disease in the world can be managed nicely.
