Natural Cure For Periodontal Disease

Abstract

What if the grinder machine at your home gets malfunctioned, it will be a total mess for the house maker. It will be very difficult to grind spices and vegetables for gravy. This could be seen as the importance of gums and teeth for our body. Without the help of healthy gums and teeth, the process of mastication will be difficult and would lead to indigestion. The process of digestion starts from the mouth itself when the food is properly chewed and mixed with enzymes secreted along with saliva. This is of great importance, as the breakdown of starches into sugars which could be digested easily. Therefore it is mandatory to maintain gums and teeth healthy. Today we are going to discuss periodontal disease in detail in our article.

Periodontal Disease

Introduction

Periodontal disease is a serious condition which involves inflammation of the gums and the jawbone. It is usually a result of poor oral hygiene which includes poor brushing of teeth. This bad oral hygiene leads to formation of plaque. In the later stages it could lead to bleeding gums and in severe cases there might be tooth loss.

Causes

Following are the causes of the periodontal disease:

  • The main cause of the periodontal disease is poor oral hygiene which might be seen as skipping brushing of teeth. Our mouth is full of bacteria which forms a plaque on the teeth. This plaque is easily removable if we are constantly looking after our teeth by brushing them. When this plaque is not removed, it hardens with time and turns into a hardened substance called tartar. This isn’t removed by simple brushing.
  • Smoking
  • Diabetes
  • Chronic diseases like AIDS
  • Defective oral fillings

Symptoms

The symptoms of the periodontal disease are as follows:

  • Swollen gums
  • Bleeding from gums
  • Pus formation in gums/teeth
  • Foul smelling breath
  • Loosening of teeth or loss of tooth
  • Painful mastication

Diagnosis

A patient presenting with the above mentioned complaints will be examined by the physician in the opd itself. Physicians may ask the questions regarding the history of the present complaints to look for risk factors like smoking, diabetes or recent usage of such medications which might cause dryness of mouth. In severe cases, physicians may order an X-ray of buccal cavity to check the bone loss.

Treatment in Allopathy

It does not seem very hopeful when it comes about the treatment of periodontal disease in Allopathy. The treatment of periodontal diseases in allopathy is more or less related with prescribing antibiotics, surgical interventions to remove plaques, and root canaling.

Ayurvedic Point of View in Periodontal Disease

The ayurvedic system of medicine believes in a holistic approach when diagnosing and preparing a treatment plan for any disease. It is strongly believed in Ayurveda that all beings are made up of some combination of elements present in the Universe i.e Earth, Air, Space, Water and Fire. These combinations of the elements give rise to doshas. There are three doshas in Ayurveda. Vata, Pitta and Kapha dosha. They all co-exist in all living organisms be it humans or animals in a balanced state. Disease is a result of vitiation of one of the three doshas. Therefore the healing of dosha ultimately leads to restoration of health. In periodontal disease, the culprit is Pitta dosha. It is therefore the pitta dosha which is to be pacified in order to cure periodontal disease.
