INTRODUCTION

Lymphoma is a cancer of the lymph nodes. This may be localized or may be spread throughout the entire body. The lymphatic system includes lymph nodes and the lymphatic vessels. The Lymphatic system includes the movements of fluids and other substances through the body and also it carries out immune functions in response to fight against various toxins or infections. Lymphoma is one of the most common types of cancer in dogs. This cancer develops from specific cells of the immune system which is called lymphocytes that circulate in the body through blood. This is the reason it is considered as systemic disease. In over half of the dogs diagnosed with disease and this is mainly present in their peripheral lymph nodes and less commonly found in the chest cavity, intestines, skin or other organs.

ETIOLOGY/CAUSES

Doctors don’t know the exact cause for this disease. As per the studies, scientists currently don’t know the reason for this lymphoma in dogs. Only hope that advanced genetic studies eventually help to identify the cause of this disease. Or we can think in this way that dogs also share the same environment and they are exposed to many things which cause cancer in the body.

CLINICAL FEATURES/SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

The symptoms of this disease in dogs vary on the different types of lymphoma.

The Different Symptoms Of This Disease Are

• In Multicentric Lymphoma: The first symptom of this disease is swollen lymph nodes. The sizes of these nodes are 3-10 times their normal size. These are painless and like a firm. Other symptoms are lethargy, fever, anorexia, weakness. It accounts for 80-85% of cases of lymphoma in dogs.
• In Alimentary Lymphoma: This type of disease affects the intestines of the dogs and may present with vomiting, abdominal pain, anorexia and weight loss. This is the second most common type of lymphoma.
• In Mediastinal Lymphoma: In this type, dogs have difficulty in breathing. This is due to the presence of large mass within the chest or due to the accumulation of fluid in chest covering.
• In Extranodal Lymphomas: The symptoms in this type vary depending on the organs affected. It may cause respiratory symptoms, renal symptoms etc.

DIAGNOSIS

First we have to keep in mind that all enlarged lymph nodes are not cancerous lymphoma. So veterinarian doctors perform tests to determine the cause of this disease in dogs. So the most common test used in the diagnosis of lymphoma is a fine needle aspiration test. Then this aspirated fluid is examined under a microscope and looks for the evidence of cancerous cells. Other test are

• X-rays
• Ultrasonography

TREATMENT

Lymphoma is treated with chemotherapy. For lymphomas there are a variety of procedures used, but chemotherapy is the treatment of choice for lymphoma in dogs. Dogs tend to tolerate chemotherapy treatment better than human beings. Surgery or radiation may also be applicable for certain types of low grade Lymphoma.
