Abstract

Here, we are going to discuss Liver Hemangioma, but before that it is better to learn some facts about our Liver. Liver is the heaviest internal organ and found only in vertebrates. It weighs around 1.2-1.5 kg. Introduction

Liver hemangioma is a non cancerous mass formed in the liver. It is developed when networks of blood vessels in the liver starts to tangle with each other. Other terms for this condition are hepatic hemangioma and cavernous hemangioma. Normally, this condition does not show any symptoms. It is discovered or diagnosed eventually during a test or procedure for any other condition. Hemangioma is basically a collection of blood vessels which forms a benign lump in the liver. This is usually a benign vascular tumor.

Etiology/Causes

Researchers don’t know the exact cause of this condition. They believe that liver hemangiomas are congenital. Other possible risk factors are:

• Age: It is most commonly diagnosed in people of ages between 30 to 50

This condition generally doesn’t show any symptoms. But if liver hemangioma causes signs and symptoms, they may include:

• Pain in the upper right abdomen
• Feeling full after eating small amount of meal
• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Loss of appetite

Diagnosis

Tests and procedures which are used to diagnose liver hemangioma include:

• Ultrasound: This scan is useful in confirmation of the diagnosis. This method uses high-frequency sound waves to produce the images of the liver.
• Computed Tomography (CT scan): CT scan helps to diagnose the condition by taking a series of X-ray images from different angles around the body.
• Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI): This technique uses a magnetic field to create detailed images of the liver.

Treatment

If hemangioma is small and doesn’t cause any symptoms, then you won’t need treatment because in most of the cases this condition will never grow and cause problems. But if this condition causes symptoms then possible treatment options may include:

• We can do conservative management by using drugs- corticosteroids.
• Surgical option: If conservative management fails to cure this disease, then surgical procedure should be done. Hepatic artery ligation procedure should be done. In this procedure we just cut off the blood supply to the hemangioma or normally we can remove the hemangioma from the liver.
