What is Cutaneous Mucinosis?

The term cutaneous mucinosis is collectively used for heterogeneous skin diseases which are caused due to the deposition of mucin or glycosaminoglycan (GAG) in the skin. Mucin is a protein produced by mast cells and fibroblasts which is a part of the dermal connective tissues. 1. Primary Cutaneous Mucinoses

I) Lichen Myxedema (LM)

It is also known as papular mucinosis and is a chronic type of cutaneous mucinosis. This type is characterized by nodules, plaques, fibrosis and lichenoid papules in the dermis. There are two clinical subsets of lichen myxedema :

  1. Localized Lichen Myxedema
  2. Scleromyxedema

II) Reticular Erythematous Mucinosis (REM)

This category mostly referred to as plaque-like mucinosis or midline mucinosis which is a rare form of cutaneous mucinosis. This is caused due to exposure to sunlight and can result in the formation of small lumps or papules on the chest portion.

III) Scleromyxedma

This condition is also known as scleroderma lichen or Arndt-Gottron disease usually characterized by the cutaneous eruption, papular and sclerodermoids. The affected individual develops fibrosis, firm and firm papules.

2. Self-Healing Juvenile Cutaneous Mucinosis (SJCM)

This type is a rare type of skin disorder that usually affects children and adolescents. It is usually characterized by inflammation and lesions.

3. Lupus Erythematosus

This is also known as lupus which is an autoimmune disorder mostly characterized by skin rash, seizures, pain in the chest, fatigue, swelling in ankles and joints. Lupus erythematosus may also show butterfly-shaped rashes on nose and cheeks which characterizes this condition.
