Natural Cure For Monomelic Amyotrophy with Herbal Remedies
Abstract
Monomelic Amyotrophy or Hirayama Disease is a rare neurological manifestation characterised by weakness in the upper extremities of the body. It is a lower motor neuron disease of the spinal cord. Motor neuron disease is an umbrella term for the diseases that affect the brain and spinal cord. Motor neurons are those nerve cells that control movements, so on its degeneration, conditions like wasting and weakness of the muscle is experienced, gradually limiting the motion of the limbs.
Hirayama disease is characterised by initial progressive muscle wasting and weakness in the muscles of upper limbs, succeeded by a spontaneous arrest of all movement capacity within a few years. The condition is most common among young men in the age group of 15 to 25, often seen more in the Arad countries than in Asia and Europe.
Symptoms of Monomelic Amyotrophy
Even though, like any other motor neuron lesion, the signs are not specific to a single condition, but the below mentioned are the most commonly seen symptoms of Hirayama disease.
During the initial stages of Monomelic Amyotrophy, individuals have complained of weakness in the fine muscles of their upper limb in the forearm. As the disease progresses, tremors, ptosis and cramps are experienced in the same location of the arm. But loss of sensation has not been reported in any cases. As the lower limbs are not affected, the person continues to have a normal gait while the disease undergoes further progression.
Causes for Monomelic Amyotrophy
Studies have found that this condition is an effect of benign mass seen in the C7, C8 and T1 segments of the spinal cord, compressing it and further causing the weakness of the associated muscles with communications from the associated sites. It may be accompanied with autonomic dysfunction shown with exaggerated muscle weakness on exposure to cold, cold skin, prudent sweating and loss of hair on the dorsum of the hands.
The pathogenesis of Hirayama disease still remains obscure. However some researchers do argue that it is due to circulatory insufficiency of blood, while others believe it’s a counter current autoimmune trigger. Apart from these sources, the disease may also occur due to nervous damage just like any other nervous ailments including compression, infract, damage, inflammation, radiological injury, etc. to the spinal cord. With a multitude of symptoms varying from individual to individual, it is necessary to get a prompt diagnosis with effective treatments. With the budding developments in modern health science, surgery is advised to offer partial motion restoration for Monomelic Amyotrophy.
Ayurveda in the Field of Motor Lesions
According to Ayurveda, the unmarked fluctuations of Vata dosha are responsible for all ailments of the cognitive as well as neurological aspect. The Vata might be responsible for the disease as the other Dosha or Dushya might be blocking its path of circulation. Vata diseases described in Ayurvedic classics include a wide variety of inflammatory, degenerative, obstructive and functional disturbances involving all the systemic functions.
Removing the blockage caused by the specific Dosha and maintaining the optimacy of vata is the primitive line of treatment adopted in Ayurveda. It can be effectively achieved under the guidance of Ayurvedic physicians by the specific usage of certain oral medications and peripheral treatment modalities including oleation, fomentation and purification procedures like nasal administration of medicated oil etc.
