What is Molluscum Contagiosum? – Causes, Symptoms and Ayurvedic Treatment
Abstract
Molluscum Contagiosum is a viral infection which affects our skin. Viruses are the nanoparticles of genetic material either DNA or RNA. These viruses are coated by a protein coat. Viruses are dependent on their host for their survival. This viral disease infects the skin. Skin is the largest organ in our body and it protects us from various infections. But sometimes our protective covering also gets infected by these viruses and causes symptoms like itching, rashes, burning sensation etc. Further in this article we are going to discuss a viral infection known as molluscum contagiosum and its ayurvedic treatment.
Introduction
Molluscum Contagiosum is a skin infection. This infection is sometimes called water warts. It results in small raised pink lesions. These warts occur singly or in groups over the skin. It may affect any part of the body. But commonly affected areas include abdomen, face, arms, neck, genital area and legs. This infection usually goes away within one year. Approximately 9 out of 10 children are infected by this disease, although this disease can occur at any age. Generally this disease is harmless and normally gets away for its own. But it may take a long time to clear completely.
Ayurvedic Aspect
In Ayurveda we can correlate this disease with Ajagallika. This disease is caused by vitiated Kapha and Vata dosha.
Lakshan(symptoms) of Ajagallika1
This shloka quoted that unctuous, skin coloured, knotted, painless, size of the green gram is the features of Ajagallika
Etiology/Causes
This infection is caused by a poxvirus. This poxvirus is called molluscum contagiosum virus (MCV). This virus can be spread through:
- Direct contact with the patient
- Touching contaminated objects
- Sexual contact
- Sometimes this disease may spread to other areas of the body by the patient itself
Clinical Features/Signs and Symptoms
The person who is suffering from molluscum contagiosum virus shows following symptoms:
- Lesions are flesh-coloured and dome shapes
- They have pearly appearance
- Lesions are often 1-5 mm in diameter
- Sometimes these lesions may itch or become irritated
- Eczema can develops around the lesions
Risk Factors
Risk Factor Includes
- Weak immune system
- Atopic dermatitis
- Crowded living conditions
Diagnosis
Diagnosis is generally made on the appearance of the lesions. Lesions look like water warts. The virus cannot routinely be cultured. The diagnosis can be confirmed by excisional biopsy.
Treatment of Molluscum Contagiosum
Usually molluscum contagiosum resolves without any treatment. The treatment option can cause discomfort to children. So the initial recommendation is to simply wait for the lesions to resolve on their own. For mild cases, wart medicines such as salicylic acid may be used for the lesions. Studies suggested that cantharidin is an effective and safe treatment for removing the lesions, though it has some common mild side effects such as pain or blistering. Surgical treatment includes cryosurgery.
Ayurvedic treatment for Ajagallika2
The above quoted shloka states that
- In apakva (raw) Ajagallika, we should do raktamokshan (bloodletting) with the help of Jaloka (LLeech)
- After Raktamokshan we should apply kalka (paste) with shukti (pearl), sajjikhar (calcium compound) and yavakshar (calcium compound)
- We can also apply paste of shyama (Ocimum sanctum), kalihari (Gloriosa superba) and patha (Cyclea peltata)
