Abstract
Masticatory muscle myositis is an autoimmune disorder that occurs in dogs. Dogs are very connected to humans in all ways. In this disease dogs suffer from jaw pain and inability to open their mouth because the dog’s immune system recognizes their muscle cells as foreign and attacks them. Introduction
It is an autoimmune disorder that occurs in dogs in which masticatory muscles (muscles which help in mastication) of the dog get swollen. In this disease dogs cannot open their mouths properly. They cannot chew and eat. It occurs both in male and female dogs. This disease can be acute or chronic and can be fatal as the dog cannot open his mouth and can’t eat and drink properly. It can be caused by infection, stress, cancer and autoimmune disorder. Average dog age of this disease is three years but it can be managed properly if diagnosed early. Some breeds that are more prone to this disease are rottweilers, weimaraners, labrador retrievers , german shepherds and doberman pinscher.
Stages
It has mainly two stages
Acute stage:- in acute stage the dog’s masticatory muscles get swollen and inability to open his mouth. The condition in which a dog cannot open his mouth is called trismus.
Chronic stage:- if the proper treatment is not given in acute stage then it leads to chronic stage in which muscle atrophy occur due to replacement of muscle fibers into fibrous tissue

- Difficulty in eating

Cause
It can be caused by several factors such as:-

- Cancer:- continuity inflammation causes a pre-cancer stage and it will turn into

Diagnosis
- Physical examination – Physical symptoms shown by dog such as inability to open his mouth, sunken eyes leads to masticatory muscle myositis
- Blood test – In this we can measure the antibodies that attacks muscle fibers
- Electromyography -by this test we can assess the health of muscle and nerves
- Muscle biopsy – in this biopsy is taken from the affected part.
