Management of Eosinophilic Lung Disease/Pulmonary Eosinophilia in Ayurveda

Abstract

Pulmonary eosinophilia is a term applied to a number of clinical and pathologic entities characterized by increased infiltration of eosinophilic leukocytes in the lung, with or without eosinophilia in the blood. These disorders have different categories which we will discuss later in this article.  In this article, we are going to discuss Eosinophilic lung disease and its ayurvedic treatment.

Introduction

Eosinophilic lung diseases are a group of Pulmonary disorders and a rare group of heterogeneous diseases characterized by the increase of the eosinophil ratio in airways and lung parenchyma. Pulmonary diseases associated with tissue and/or blood eosinophilia are a heterogeneous group of disorders. Some syndromes overlap, but this approach is convenient from the diagnostic standpoint. Inhaled or ingested extrinsic factors, including medications and infectious agents (eg, parasites, fungi, mycobacteria), may trigger an eosinophilic immune response. This may be mild and self-limited, as in Loeffler syndrome.

Classifications on the basis of etiology and pathogenesis

1. Simple Pulmonary eosinophilia or Loeffler’s syndrome – This type is characterized by transient pulmonary lesions and eosinophilia in the blood. In Loeffler’s syndrome, the lungs show alveoli with thick septa. This septum thickens due to an infiltrate composed of eosinophils and giant cells.
2. Tropical eosinophilia – Tropical eosinophilia, or TPE, is characterized by coughing, asthmatic attacks, and an enlarged spleen, and is caused by Wuchereria bancrofti, a filarial infection. It occurs most frequently in India and Southeast Asia. Tropical eosinophilia is considered a manifestation of a species of microfilaria.
3. Chronic Pulmonary Eosinophilia – This type is characterized by focal areas of cellular consolidation of the substance of the lungs. Prominently in these lesions, there is a heavy aggravation of lymphocytes and eosinophils.

Symptoms

A person suffering from Pulmonary eosinophilia may have the following symptoms —

1. Wheezing
2. Blood or mucus while coughing
3. Shortness of breath(Dyspnea)
4. Rhinitis
5. Sudden weight loss
6. Night sweating
7. Breathlessness
8. Difficulty while breathing, chest congestion and pain,
9. High temperature
10. Coughing

Causes

The following cause of eosinophilic lung disease is

1. It can be caused due to any Parasite infection.
2. Allergic reactions mainly due to aspergillus mold
3. Adverse effects of anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen or any other antibiotics

Diagnosis

Following are the diagnostic tests to detect the problem of Eosinophilic Lung Disease—

1. Chest X-ray or CT scan.
2. Lung function test.
3. Lung Biopsy.
4. Complete blood count.
5. Sample of lung fluid.

Ayurvedic Aspect

Eosinophilic Lung Disease can be correlated with Pranvahastrotodushti due to ama dosha (toxins) in the body. The regular accumulation of toxins leads to the vitiation of dosha and dhatus. The regular intake of virudhahr (incompatible food) leads to raised kapha dosha in the body and kapha trapped in the lungs may cause Pranvahastrotodushti.
