Left Ventricular(LV) Hypertrophy Treatment in Ayurveda
LV (Left Ventricular) Hypertrophy or Cardiac Hypertrophy, is the most common in people, who have uncontrolled High Blood Pressure. LV (Left Ventricular) Hypertrophy leads to the risk of heart attack and stroke. This is an enlargement as well as thickening of the main pumping chamber of the heart wall known as the left ventricle. Also defined as an increase in the size and weight of myocardium. Due to high blood pressure, the left ventricle has to work harder. As the increased workload, the wall thickens. As a result, the enlarged or thickened heart muscle loses its elasticity and gradually fails to pump.
The basic factors leading to left ventricular (LV) hypertrophy of the myocardial fibers are not yet known. In response to stress, stretching of myocardial fibers induces the cells to increase in length.
Other factors, causing this disorder may include anorexia and the influence of certain hormones such as catecholamines and pituitary growth hormones.
Women with hypertension are more prone to this disease. Genetic conditions are also associated with left ventricular hypertrophy. Hypertension and diabetes are two major factors that cause this disorder.
Major Symptoms of Left Ventricular Hypertrophy
Left ventricular hypertrophy is the condition, that starts gradually. During the early stages of the disease you may experience no sign and symptoms, especially during the early stage:
- During exercise, the patient feels chest pain
- Dizziness and sudden fainting
- Palpitations
- The sensation of rapid heartbeat
- Shortness of breath
- Excessive fatigue
What are the Causes of Left Ventricular Hypertrophy?
The most common causes that are responsible for left ventricular hypertrophy are-
- Hypertension (High Blood Pressure)
- Diabetes (Type 2 diabetes)
- Aortic Valve Stenosis: The narrowing of the aortic valve, that separates the left ventricle from the large blood vessel aorta. The stenosis of the aortic valve makes the left ventricle to work harder in pumping blood.
- Mitral insufficiency
- Occlusive coronary artery disease
- Congenital anomalies like patent ductus arteriosus
- Thyrotoxicosis
- Anemia
- Arteriovenous fistula.
What are the Complications of Left Ventricular Hypertrophy?
- Insufficient blood supply to the heart.
- Enlargement of the aorta i.e. aortic dilation.
- Irregular, rapid heartbeat (palpitation) that decreases the blood flow to the body.
Treatment of Left Ventricular Hypertrophy
In modern medicine, there are various medicines such as angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors or angiotensin II receptor blockers are prescribed, but these have severe side effects, as well as they don’t remove the root cause of the disease.
