Each disease is presented with its specific signs and symptoms that help the physician in diagnosing the disease. Today, in this article we are going to discuss the three P’s of diabetes and its management through herbal medicine.
Introduction
Diabetes is a severe and chronic illness, a larger amount of population from all around the world are affected by this disease. Diabetes causes the levels of blood glucose to spike up which is responsible for causing many complications. The most common symptoms seen in diabetes are Polyuria, Polydipsia, and Polyphagia which help in identifying the condition. This results in an increase in urine, thirst, and hunger or appetite respectively. Diagnosing Diabetes at an early stage helps in managing the disease and reducing the burden on patients suffering from diabetes. This can also help in treating the patient at the early stage and preventing the patient from other complications.
The three 3 P’s are the early indication of the patient that they are high levels of blood sugar. In type 1 diabetes all three symptoms are developed very quickly making it obvious whereas in type 2 diabetes the 3 P,s are developed very slowly and it makes it difficult to diagnose. Patients with type 2 diabetes most of the time ignore the signs and delay the diagnosis making the condition worse.
What Are the Three P’s Of Diabetes?
The three P’s of diabetes is seen when the high blood glucose level is shooted high. The glucose is filtered through the help of the Kidney which is then absorbed back into the blood. If the levels of glucose are high then the Kidney is not able to function properly and makes them unable to reabsorb all the sugar and it is passed into the urine.
1. Polyuria
The high levels of sugar in urine result in excessive loss of water from the body through urination and this results in polyuria.
2. Polydipsia
This loss of water results in causing dehydration and this, in turn, causes an increase in thirst. This is known as Polydipsia.
3. Polyphagia
When there is insufficient level of insulin in the body caused by diabetes, this results in poor absorption of blood sugar in the tissue and hence developing polyphagia. When there is low sugar in the body, the production of energy is decreased and your hunger is increased resulting in polyphagia.
Mechanism of three P’s in Diabetes
As discussed above these three P’s are the early indications of the patient suffering from diabetes along with
1. Polyuria
It is one of the three P’s and one of the early symptoms seen in a diabetic patient. These people usually have the urgent urge to pass urine and they might also experience sleeplessness due to frequent urination. The quantity of urine is also increased.
When the levels of blood sugar are increased, the body starts to flush an excessive amount of blood glucose through the kidney. In this process, the kidney starts to filter out an excessive amount of water through the blood which increases their urge to pass urine. During this process of filtration, the kidney is not able to absorb the sugar required by the body for energy, and a large amount of sugar is passed through urination.
2. Polydipsia
It is described as the increased feeling of thirst or the urge to drink water has increased. These symptoms are usually connected with diabetes mellitus. The main cause for the symptom is high levels of glucose present in the bloodstream. In the patient with Diabetes, the body flushes out sugar more than normal which causes increased urination.
The increased amount of urination causes the loss of body water and hence resulting in dehydration due to which the thirst is increased. In order to satisfy the thirst, the patient starts to drink an increased amount of water. Thus, increased thirst makes you drink more water and the urination is continued in diabetic patients.
3. Polyphagia
It is basically a term that is described as increased hunger or excessive appetite in the patient. It is seen that patients with diabetes have uncontrolled hunger and cravings of salty or sweet foods. In spite of eating a sufficient amount of food, the level of hunger is not decreased.
In normal people, the food consumed by them is converted into glucose which then acts as a source of energy used by the body cells. The pancreas present in the body helps in producing insulin which is responsible for supporting the passage of glucose to the cells. But, In patients with diabetes, the pancreas is not able to work properly and is not able to produce a sufficient amount of insulin hormone to facilitate the passage of glucose to the cells. In this process, the body cells start to starve for glucose and the cells present in the brain become aware. This then triggers the hypothalamus which increases the hunger and appetite of the patient.
