Introduction

About Klebsiella Pneumoniae

Klebsiella pneumoniae is a rod shaped, gram negative and non-motile pathogenic enteric bacteria which is known to penetrate human intestinal barrier and causes various infections and diseases. This is a lactose fermenting anaerobic bacteria that belongs to Enterobacteriaceae genus. Klebsiella causes various diseases like hospital acquired urinary tract infections (UTIs), pneumonia, septicemia and community-acquired pyogenic liver abscess (PLA).

Intestines are considered as major reservoirs of Klebsiella pneumoniae, though intestines are lined by a mucosal epithelial layer that creates a barrier for pathogens and infections caused by them. According to the studies, there are two major routes through which microbes penetrate intestinal epithelium i.e. intracellular and paracellular pathways.

Infections Caused by Klebsiella Pneumoniae

Klebsiella are ubiquitous in nature and have two common habitats i.e. environment (water, sewage, etc.) and as a saprophyte in humans. These do not cause any harm when they are in intestines but results in severe infections when they start spreading in other parts of body. This can infect our lungs, bladder, brain, liver, eyes, blood and wounds. It is known to infect 8% of all nosocomial bacterial infections.

How Infections are Spread ?

The carrier rates dramatically increases in the hospital environment as it has been reported that hospitalized patients have 77% klebsiella in stool, 19% in pharynx and approximately 42% on the hands. This can spread from person to person by contaminated hands of healthcare personnel or through air. Patients may also get exposed to this pathogen when they are on ventilators or vein catheters.

Clinical Features Linked with Klebsiella Infections

Infections caused by Klebsiella can vary with the site of infection caused. Some of the common features according are given as follows:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Sudden weight loss due to inflammation and enterotoxin production which may also result in anemia
  • Sleeping disorder
  • Headaches
  • Sore lymph nodes

Mechanism of Action

Klebsiella inhibits the process of phagocytosis in which the normal of functioning of WBC’s get hindered. This in turn reduces the inflammatory responses by innate immune response. This bacterial strain has the ability to develop resistance against antimicrobial peptides released by the immunity.

How Infections can be Diagnosed ?

Various clinical diagnosis which are done for the infected tissue are urine, blood, stool test, and sputum. Some of the imaging test such as ultrasound rays, computerized tomography (CT) may also confirm the infection. Sometimes GI mapping is done in severe conditions.

How to Prevent klebsiella’s Infection from Spreading ?

In order to prevent the infection from spreading should clean their hands more often including:

  • After using washrooms and restrooms
  • Coughing or sneezing
  • Before touching eyes, mouth or nose
  • Before eating meals or cooking
  • Visiting from hospital
  • After touching doorknobs, phone, bedrails, etc.

Ayurvedic Aspect for the Klebsiella Infection

According to the Ayurvedic principles, Jeevanu (micro-organism) or krimi and the toxins produced by them can vitiate all the three Dosha which further leads to infections. Infections caused by klebsiella can be associated with Mutravahasrotasroga because of the factthat this caused retention of water inside body.
