Herbal Remedies for Prostate Cancer – Symptoms and Causes
Abstract
Prostate cancer mostly occurs in men over 65 years of age, and 15 percent of men suffer from it. This is a very serious disease, and by the time it is detected, its metastasis has already started. Its initial sign is that it appears hard like a stone on rectal examination; later, it becomes stable. It is the most common cancer found in men and is the second leading cause of cancer death in the world (the first is bronchogenic carcinoma). The most common site of prostate cancer is the posterior lobe. It is an adenocarcinoma, as it occurs in glandular cells.
Introduction
Prostate cancer develops in this little walnut-shaped gland that is found behind the bladder and in front of the rectum in males and those who were assigned male at birth (AMAB). This tiny gland creates a fluid that mixes with semen to keep the sperm healthy for conception and fertilization. The disease of prostate cancer is dangerous. Thankfully, most men who have prostate cancer are found to have the disease before it has gone past the prostate gland. Cancer frequently disappears when treated at this stage.
Stages Of Prostate Cancer
- Occult: Diagnosed after investigation due to suspicion
- Stage 1: Tumor confined to local prostatic nodule
- Stage 2: Tumor involving capsule or diffuse type
- Stage 3: Tumor involving seminal vesicle
- Stage 4: Extension into adjacent tissue
Causes Of Prostate Cancer
It is unclear what causes Prostate Cancer. Doctors are aware that prostate cells change their DNA, which is how prostate cancer starts. A cell’s DNA contains the instructions governing its behavior. The adjustments instruct the cells to grow and divide more quickly than typical cells do. The abnormal cells survive whereas other cells would perish. The accumulated aberrant cells create a tumor, which can spread to invade neighboring tissue. Over time, certain aberrant cells may separate and “metastasize” to other body regions.
There are some causes that can cause prostate cancer:
- Prostatitis
- Lower levels of Vitamin D
- Elevated levels of Testosterone
- Blood in urine
- Nocturia
- Dysuria
- Pain in the Pelvis, spine and ribs
- Lymphedema
- Renal insufficiency
Symptoms Of Prostate Cancer
- Weight loss
- Anorexia
- Anemia
- frequent and occasionally urgent urge to urinate, especially at night.
- urinary incontinence or intermittent incontinence.
- Dysuria (burning or aching when you urinate)
- Urinary incontinence (bladder control issues)
- Faecal incontinence (bowel control issues)
- ED (erectile dysfunction) and painful ejaculation
- Hematospermia (blood in semen or pee)
- discomfort in your chest, hips, or lower back.
Diagnosis
- Physical examination by the doctor: Rectal examinations are performed to determine the prostate’s size and location.
- PSA Test: Protein-Specific Antigen (PSA) is a protein that is produced by the prostate gland. Cancer may be indicated by high PSA levels. Levels also rise if you have benign conditions like BPH or prostatitis.
- TRUS (trans-rectal ultrasonography): It is performed to see the prostatic size and local metastasis.
- Biopsy: The biopsy test is performed to examine the cells’ types physically and determine whether or not they are malignant.
- CT scans and MRI scans: These are crucial instruments for determining the prostate gland or tumor’s size.
- Liver Function test: It is performed to exclude liver metastasis.
- Renal Function test: Serum creatinine and serum urea levels increased in the case of chronic obstruction.
Risk Factors
- Age: Growing older puts you at greater risk. You have a greater likelihood of being diagnosed if you are over 50. About 60% of incidences of prostate cancer in men over 65 impact older adults.
- Race: Black people are more likely to get prostate cancer than people of other races, for unknown reasons. Prostate cancer in black men is also more likely to be aggressive or progress.
- Family history: You may be at a higher risk if a blood relative—a parent, sibling, or child—has been identified as having prostate cancer. Additionally, if you have a significant family history of breast cancer or if you carry the BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene, your risk of developing prostate cancer may be increased.
- Obesity: Compared to persons who are regarded to be of a healthy weight, those who are obese may have an increased chance of prostate cancer, while studies have produced conflicting findings. Obese individuals have a higher risk of the cancer being more aggressive and coming back after the initial course of therapy.
Additional Possible Risk Factors:
- Prostatitis
- Smoking
- Having a BMI > 30 (having obesity)
- STIs (sexually transmitted infections)
- Agent Orange exposure (an agent used in the Vietnam War)
Management According To Modern Science
- Radical prostatectomy: Open radical prostatectomy and Robotic radical prostatectomy
- Radiation therapy
- Hormone therapy
- Chemotherapy
- Immunotherapy
- Other drugs
Prevention
- Get regular prostate screenings
- Maintain a healthy weight
- Exercise regularly
- Eat a nutritious diet
- Quit smoking
Ayurvedic Overview
In Ayurveda, it is correlated with Arbuda. Arbuda, which develops as a result of metabolic as well as catabolic crises in the body, is one of the most serious and possibly difficult, life-threatening diseases of the modern day. The vitiation of tridosha, dhatu, agni, and mala leads to cancer. Aggravated vata dosha is the cause of abnormal cell division. All enzymatic activity and hormonal imbalance are caused by the pitta dosha, while the kapha dosha gives the tumour its distinct appearance. According to Acharya Sushurta, Arbuda is caused by “The Doshas having vitiated in any part of the body and afflicting the Mamsa, and produce a swelling, which is circular, fixed, slightly painful, big in size, broad-based, slowly growing, and does not suppurate.” These are the blatant signs and symptoms of cancer. Arbuda has been characterized by Acharya Charaka as a Vata-Rakta complication.
Nidana Of Arbuda
Using this ancient verse, Acharya Sushrut explained how the Vatadi dosha in our bodies becomes aggravated and toxins the muscle tissue, causing an inflammation known as Arbud in Ayurveda. Arbud is a type of inflammation that is round, stable, less painful, large, spread throughout deep-seated bodily tissues, and does not suppurate.
Types Of Arbuda
