Hepatic Sarcoidosis – Causes, Symptoms & Treatment in Ayurveda
Introduction
Sarcoidosis is a rare chronic disease in which noncaseating granuloma forms in the liver and affects the tissues and multiple organs, most of including hilar lymph nodes and pulmonary sites. Liver, bone marrow, skin, salivary glands, spleen and heart are common sites of manifestation of diseases. It occurs in the whole world. Females are more affected than males. Etiology is unknown. In one large United States study granulomas in liver biopsies were shown to be due to sarcoidosis in 38% of cases, primary liver disease in 31%, tuberculosis in 12%, and schistosomiasis in 3%, in 15% of cases no etiology could be determined. It mostly targets young people. Let’s discuss it in detail!
Introduction
The liver is frequently involved in systemic sarcoidosis, although hepatic symptoms are unusual. It is an autoimmune disorder characterized by multiple noncaseating granulomas in the liver that affects the multiple organs and tissues.
Etiology
Etiology is exactly unknown. But it might be caused by multifactorial:-
- Environmental factor
- Genetic factor
- Immunological interplay
Symptoms
Mostly it is asymptomatic. Following are the symptom which is seen in some patients:-
- Abdominal pain
- Fatigue
- Itching
- Fever
- Loss of weight
- Jaundice
- Hepatomegaly
Skin related symptoms
- Tenderness
- Nodules formation around scars
- Lesions on the nose, ears and cheeks
- Hoarseness of voice
- Lymph gland tender in the neck, armpits and groin
- Purple-reddish colored bumps or rashes on shins or ankles
Heart related symptoms
- Chest pain
- Fatigue
- Fast heartbeat
- Breathlessness
- Irregular heartbeat
- Fainting
- Swelling
Lung related symptoms
- Pain in chest
- Breathlessness
- Wheezing sound
- Persistent cough
Eye related symptoms
- Eyes pain
- Blurry vision
- Dry, burning and itchy in eye
- Redness
- Watery discharge
Diagnosis
- Liver function test:- Elevation of serum alkaline phosphatase and gamma glutamyl transpeptidase in the absence of any other abnormal liver function tests is typical.
- Liver biopsy:- Liver biopsy reveals multiple noncaseating granulomas.
- Computed tomography scan:- In this scan, noncaseating granuloma are shown.
Ayurvedic overview
In ayurveda we can correlate hepatic sarcoidosis with involvement of tridosha that is vaat (air), pitta (fire) and kapha (water). These three dosha are responsible for development of this disease. Balance of all three doshas leads to health and imbalance of these doshas leads to such diseases. Vaat is the life, strength and sustainer of creatures. Vitiation of vata takes place from either wasting of dhatus or obstruction in passage. Vata, pitta and kapha move in all the channels of the body. Due to subtleness, vaat itself provokes the other two doshas. When aggravated it excites them and carrying them to different places produces different disorders due to obstruction in passage and dries up rasa etc.

1. Kanchnaar Guggul
It is a herbal tablet which is made from kachnar bark (Bauhinia variegata), amalaki (Emblica offinalis), haritaki (terminalia chebula), etc. It is bitter and astringent in taste but hot in effect. Conclusion
Hepatic sarcoidosis is an autoimmune disorder which occurs rarely. In this condition multiple noncaseating granulomas are developed most commonly in hilar lymph nodes and pulmonary sites. In ayurveda, we can correlate this disease with vitiation of three doshas that are vata, pitta and kapha.
