Abstract

Hemochromatosis is a genetic disorder that is characterized by iron overload in the blood. In this condition, the body stores too much iron. This disease can cause serious damage to the body including the heart, liver, and pancreas. The iron increases in the body because the body absorbs too much iron from the food. The genes that have been inherited cause this disease but only a few people can develop serious conditions. Hemochromatosis was first identified in the 1800s, and by 1935 it was considered an inherited disease. It is an autosomal recessive disorder and affects 1 in 300 people in the United States. Etiology/Causes
