Abstract

Granulomatous meningoencephalitis is an inflammatory disease which involves the central nervous system. The exact cause of this disease is unknown but it is an immune mediated disease. In this disease mainly female dogs of young and middle age are affected. The lesions mainly present in the spinal cord, cerebellum, brainstem and white matter of the cerebrum. In this article we will discuss types, cause, symptoms and treatment as well as Ayurvedic management of this disease.

Introduction

It is the disease of the brain that involves the central nervous system. It is a process in which infiltration occurs by the cells of the immune system. These cells act like an army of the body. They go to the area where infection occurs and release destructive biochemicals and protect the body. This disease was firstly reported by Braud and colleagues in 1978. Granulomatous meningoencephalitis is of three types i.e. disseminated, focal and ocular. It shows many symptoms such as depression, seizures, loss of balance, incoordination, neck pain, weakness, and fever etc. Cerebrospinal fluid analysis and Brain biopsy mainly helps in diagnosis of this disease.

Types of Granulomatous Meningoencephalitis

It is of three types- Disseminated, focular and ocular, let us discuss below in details

1. Disseminated Granulomatous Meningoencephalitis

Previously it was called inflammatory reticulosis. In this disease there is accumulation of neutrophils and mononuclear cells around the blood vessels.

2. Focal Granulomatous Meningoencephalitis

This disease is mainly found in the cerebrum. All the symptoms shown by this disease develop very slowly or very fast.

3. Ocular Granulomatous Meningoencephalitis

It is a very rare form of granulomatous meningoencephalitis which causes blindness.

Causes of Granulomatous Meningoencephalitis

Granulomatous meningoencephalitis is an inflammatory disease but the exact cause of this disease is unknown. Some infections can cause this disease are mentioned as follows

Symptoms of Granulomatous Meningoencephalitis

All the types of granulomatous meningoencephalitis shows different symptoms which are mentioned as follows

1. Disseminated Granulomatous Meningoencephalitis

The symptoms shown by disseminated type of Granulomatous Meningoencephalitis are as follows

  • Depression
  • Seizures
  • Head tilt
  • Loss of balance
  • Incoordination
  • Neck pain
  • Fever

2. Focal Granulomatous Meningoencephalitis

All the symptoms shown by this develop very slowly which are written as follows

  • Dementia

3. Ocular Granulomatous Meningoencephalitis

This disease mainly affects the eyes and causes blindness. Other symptoms shown by this are as follows

  • Secondary glaucoma
  • Retinal detachment
  • Uveitis

Diagnosis of Granulomatous Meningoencephalitis

  • Cerebrospinal fluid analysis – This test is very helpful in the diagnosis of central nervous diseases. It mainly measures the different substances in cerebrospinal fluid.
  • Brain biopsy – In this test analysis is done by piece of brain tissue
  • MRI or CT scan – It is very helpful in the detection of lesions in the central nervous system.

Treatment of Granulomatous Meningoencephalitis

Granulomatous meningoencephalitis is mainly managed by corticosteroids in which immunosuppressive drugs are usually added and radiation therapy is also helpful in this disease.
