Glycogen Storage Disorder – Causes, Symptoms and Ayurvedic Treatment
Abstract
Glycogen storage disorder is a rare disorder that is characterized by inability to synthesize the glycogen in the body. This is a metabolic disorder that is caused by the deficiency of the enzyme that affects the glycogen synthesis. This disorder is a genetic disease in which the body is not able to store or break down the complex sugar glycogen properly, typically in muscles or liver cells. It affects the liver, muscles and other areas of the body. Our body’s cells need a steady supply of fuel to work properly and that fuel is known as glucose. Our body gets this fuel from breaking down the food we eat. The body combines the glucose units in complex sugar that is called glycogen. It is stored in the liver and muscle cells. When our body needs extra fuel, it breaks down the glycogen into the glucose units. This process is done with the help of some enzymes in the liver and when a person is born with missing enzymes then this process is not working and the body is not able to store or break down the glycogen units. So in this article we are going to discuss Glycogen storage disorder and its Ayurvedic management.
Etiology/Causes
Glycogen storage disorder is caused by two factors i.e. genetic and acquired.
- Genetic Glycogen storage disorder is caused by the error of metabolism (genetically defective enzymes).
