Abstract

Introduction
As mentioned earlier, Erythema dischromicum perstans is a rare disease. The condition usually presents itself with dark patches which are called hyperpigmented macules. These macules are ashy grey in color and are usually present on the skin surface. In the initial stages they are a bit raised and usually vary in size. They can be localized to one area or can present in a generalized pattern. Aforesaid this is not common in the population but in rare cases if present then the younger ratio is generally higher than older population and is commonly associated with dark skin people. Causes Of Erythema Dischromicum Perstans
The causes or etiological factors for this condition is not known. Symptoms And Signs
- Skin discoloration- dark greyish or ashy appearance of lesions. These lesions are basically blue or reddish in colour and then gradually turn greyish in appearance. It is the cardinal symptom of this condition.
- Irregular patches over the trunk, face and neck are commonly seen.
- Itching over the affected region and discomfort.
- These patches can be unilateral or bilateral.
- The shape of these lesions varies between round to oval.
- Well defined margins but elevated.
- In ayurveda the tawak vikar is believed to be the result of dosha vitiation which further results in rakta, mansa and meda dhatu vitiation. Thus causing above mentioned symptoms.
Diagnosis Of Erythema Dischromicum Perstans
The physical examination reveals a lot about the condition. Moreover for proper diagnosis skin biopsy can be done which will reveal minor vacuolar degeneration of the basal layer of skin in the early lesions. Pigmentary incontinence with dermal melanophages in established patches or lesions.
Treatment
In modern very concise treatment of Erythema dischromicum perstans is given. This condition cannot be cured but its effective management is possible. For its effective management topical steroids are given. Along with this local application of steroids exposure to ultraviolet radiations, pigment lasers and Q- switched ruby lasers are also done.
