What Is Dysautonomia?- Causes, Symptoms and Ayurvedic Treatment
Abstract
Our nervous system is the main system that controls all the body functions and helps the body parts to communicate with each other. The autonomic, somatic, sympathetic, and parasympathetic nervous systems are different systems that control different body functions. Deformity in particular nerves leads to malfunctioning of organs functioning managed by them. Dysautonomia is an abnormality of the autonomic nervous system and the body functions managed by it. It can occur in all genders at any age but is more common in women. In this article, we will discuss the functions of the autonomic nervous system along with the causes and symptoms arising due to its abnormality. At last, we will discuss the treatment of Dysautonomia and according to Ayurveda.
Introduction
Dysautonomia is defined as involuntary body functions in the human body that occur due to the dysfunction of body nerves. This can vary from mild temporary illness to severe long-term disease. The nerves of the autonomic nervous system direct the body’s functioning like heartbeat, blood pressure, metabolism, digestion, vision, etc. In Dysautonomia these functions are altered due to the malfunction of the Autonomic nervous system due to various causes explained further. Dysautonomia can occur as a direct disease (primary Dysautonomia) or can occur as an abnormal symptom of any other associated disease (Secondary Dysautonomia) such as Parkinson’s disease, Diabetes, Rheumatoid arthritis, Celiac disease, Guillain-Barre-syndrome, Crohn’s disease, Lyme disease, etc.
Depending on the nerve involved there are many types of Dysautonomia-
- Neurocardiogenic syncope
- Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome
- Multiple system atrophy
Some trigger factors of Dysautonomia can regulate the symptoms- alcohol consumption, stress, environmental temperature changes, and discomfort.
Ayurvedic Aspect
In Ayurveda, the body’s functioning and movements are managed by Vata dosha. The nervous system disorders are mostly related to the disturbance of Vata dosha levels. These vata dosha diseases are hard to manage and need proper management through various methods including ayurvedic internal and external therapies. The imbalance of vata dosha leads to an imbalance of the other two doshas Pitta and kapha dosha too. These all factors lead to abnormalities in the nervous system that will cause problems like Dysautonomia. The aggravated vata dosha hampers the nervous system and needs to be pacified as early as possible.
Causes
Dysautonomia occurs due to abnormality in the autonomic nervous system. There are many causes for the disability of the autonomic nervous system-

Diagnosis
To diagnose Dysautonomia, various diagnostic tests are recommended-
- Blood tests
- Nerves testing
- Muscle biopsy

- Checking oxygen levels
Treatment
The line of treatment for Dysautonomia varies according to the symptoms and disease progression. The common treatment line followed is-
- Symptomatic treatment for brain, digestion, and vision abnormalities
