Consequences of High CPK Test and its Herbal Treatment
Abstract
CPK test stands for Creatine phosphokinase test, which is performed for determining the levels of creatine phosphokinase enzyme in the blood. This enzyme is released due to increased muscle contraction which further enters into peripheral blood mainly in muscular dystrophy. CPK is also known as CK or creatine kinase which catalyses the transformation of creatine and utilizes adenosine triphosphate (ATP) to produce adenosine diphosphate (ADP) and phosphocreatine (PCr). We can say that creatine kinase is an enzyme playing a crucial role in increasing the conversion rate of phosphocreatine into ATP (adenosine triphosphate). In this article, we will study about the CPK enzyme and how to treat increased levels of CPK enzyme.
Creatine Phosphokinase Enzyme Test (CPK Test)
Creatine phosphokinase enzyme is very essential as it indicates the process capability. Process capability termed as the comparison between output of an uncontrollable process such as muscle contraction to the specified limits. Initially it is the prediction of the ability of a process to meet the specified limits. In muscular dystrophy or in muscle related disorders a specific isoenzyme of creatine phosphokinase is tested for its values. CPK is elevated during a heart attack, in muscular diseases, in brain related disorders and also in lung diseases. There are basically three isoenzymes that represent the brain, lungs, skeletal muscles and cardiac muscles.
Significance of CPK Test
CPK test is very helpful in detecting CPK enzymes which are present in the brain, heart and skeletal muscles. The increased levels of CPK indicate stress or injury to the brain, heart or muscle tissues. When a muscle is spoiled, CPK gets leaked into the bloodstream. So, detecting increased CPK level is helpful in determining tissue injuries at early stages.
This test is also used in
- Diagnosing heart attack
- Detecting cause of chest pain
- Determining the extent of muscle damage
- Detecting polymyositis, dermatomyositis and other muscle disorders
- Finding the difference between postoperative infection and malignant hyperthermia
The timing and pattern of an increase or decrease in levels of CPK is very essential in making a diagnosis. This is particularly appropriate if a heart attack is suspicious. In many cases, CPK test is performed along with other tests to diagnose heart attack or muscle injury.
Normal Value
The normal CPK test values are
- 10 to 120 micrograms per liter (mcg/L)
Normal value of the CPK test may slightly vary according to the laboratories. As some laboratories use distinct measurements or different testing methods.
How to Perform CPK Test?
To perform the CPK test, a blood sample is taken from the vein of the patient by a procedure known as venipuncture. This test can be repeated over 2 to 3 days if the patient is admitted in the hospital.
What Abnormal Results Mean?
High levels of CPK may be seen in the reports of the patients who have
- Electric shock
- Brain injury or stroke
- Convulsions
- Heart attack
- Electric shock
- Dermatomyositis or polymyositis
- Delirium tremens
- Rhabdomyolysis
- Myopathy
- Muscular dystrophies
- Lung tissue death
- Inflammation of the heart muscle
Some other conditions which may show positive test results are
- Hyperthyroidism
- Hypothyroidism
- Pericarditis following a heart attack
Risks
Risks correlated with having blood drawn are modest but may consists of
- Excessive bleeding
- Infection (risk of skin brokerage)
- Hematoma (blood accumulating beneath the skin)
- Fainting or feeling lightheaded
