Must Know For All Screen Stoners There!

Covid 19, quarantine, lockdown and subsequent changes in our work style and lifestyle have increased the incidence of various ailments. A major one among them is computer vision syndrome (CVS)also known as digital eye strain.

Computer Vision Syndrome

Work from home, online meetings, online classes etc. demand increased usage of mobile phones, computers. Moreover, the young generation is much more involved in online games, social media and hence their screen time also increased. A prolonged period of screen-time leads to this syndrome. It has led to a reduction in job performance as well as psychological and physiological imbalances

Causes of Computer Vision Syndrome

  • reflections and glares on the screen
  • size discrepancies
  • already existing visual problems like refractive errors
  • looking too near
  • improper sitting postures
  • improper lighting of the room
  • improper placement of computer screen

Reading from screens is more tiresome to the eyes than reading printed letters. It is because the images and words on the screen are formed out of pixels and if it is of a lesser resolution, it will be difficult to read and understand the text hence inducing much more strain on our eyes.

Pathophysiology of CVS

Three mechanisms were found to be the causes of CVS namely ocular surface mechanism, extra ocular mechanism, and accommodative mechanism. Reduction in blinking rate of eyes, corneal dryness, reduction of tear production, use of contact lens, and certain medications adds to the list.

Clinical Features

Most of the computer population have any of the following complaints

  • Blurred vision
  • Double vision
  • Short sight
  • Presbyopia
  • Dry eyes
  • Muscle and shoulder pain
  • Neck stiffness
  • Headache
  • Backache
  • Redness, burning sensation or itching of eyes

Diagnosis

By history taking, clinical examination, checking visual acuity, refractive errors etc

Preventive Methods

  • Usage of anti-glare screen
  • Adjust screen brightness
  • Ensure proper lighting of the room
  • Practice eye blinking exercises to normalize tear distribution and drainage and bring equilibrium of tear volume.
  • Maintain proper working distance at least 40 inches from the screen.
  • Maintain proper posture while working: sitting straight without bending or stooping, the toes touching the floor flatly and providing support to arms.
  • Taking enough short breaks in between
  • Setting parental controls and screen time for young children hence avoiding excess involvement in video /online games etc which disturbs their eye health.
  • Follow 20 -20 -20 rule: Every 20 minutes, take a 20 seconds break to view something at a distance of 20 feet.
  • Wear Reading glasses: helps relieve excess strain on eyes

Ayurveda Can Help You

Ayurveda -the science of life; an ancient holistic approach for the wellbeing of individuals. Every disease can be easily cured if we follow proper treatment along with proper ahara vihara. The most important aspect is nidana parivarjan  that is avoiding causative or triggering factors. Diseases are caused due to loss of equilibrium between the body humours known as doshas. Ayurveda treatment balances deranged doshas and maintains normalcy.

Ayurvedic Prespective of CVS

The eye is the most important sense organ (sarvendriyaanaam nayanam praadhanyam). Due to the above said improper practices, the well-being of the eyes is affected. Computer Vision Syndrome can be correlated to increased Vata pitta dosha condition of the eyes like "Shushkakshipaka". Major symptoms are gharshana (irritation), toda(pricking pain), kandu(itching), upadehavat (stickiness), rooksha daruna vartma(dryness)etc. Vata and pitta involved in this disease can be stabilized by proper therapy. Abhyanga (anointing), Snehapana (intake of ghee), Nasya(nasal drops), Aschotana(eye drops), Tarpana and other netra kriyakalpa (procedures for eyes)etc has been mentioned in classic ayurvedic texts for eye diseases. Moreover, vatahara (Vata alleviating) methods can be done for pain reduction like snehana, swedana, mrudhu shodhana. Lepam or liniments can be used in muscle sprain, neck stiffness etc.
