Cocoon Syndrome- Ayurvedic Aspect and Treatment
Abstract
Cocoon Syndrome is an infrequent condition of bowel obstruction. It can occur in males and females but most commonly occurs among young adolescent girls of tropical and subtropical regions. This is an inflammatory syndrome that occurs due to various causes leading to acute or chronic bowel obstruction and many other symptoms. In this article, we will clear various causes, symptoms, and diagnostic methods for cocoon syndrome along with its ayurvedic management.
Introduction
Cocoon Syndrome also known as Abdominal Cocoon Syndrome is a condition in which there is partial or complete encapsulation of the small intestine with a fibrous-collagenous membrane with an inflammatory infiltrate that causes the obstruction. Abdominal Cocoon is one of the causes of intestinal obstruction. This condition is different from peritoneal encapsulation in which the whole of the small bowel is encased in a thin accessory membrane. Cocoon Syndrome can be acute and can also be chronic. Correct diagnosis and early treatment can reduce future complications and mortality rates. Abdominal Cocoon Syndrome can be primary or secondary. While the symptoms of both conditions can be the same, it is necessary to have a differential diagnosis and rule out the exact disorder.
Ayurvedic Aspect
The miscommunication between the brain and digestive tract can cause an imbalance of doshas that can lead to dushti of strostas/ dhatus and these disturbances in the Gastrointestinal tract leads to many disorders including Abdominal Cocoon Syndrome. Nervous disorders such as stress, anxiety, and Depression cause imbalance in the gut. Hormonal imbalance due to the above-laid causes is also a causative factor for this condition, mainly in adolescent girls. Fortunately, Ayurveda has excellent remedies for the treatment of this condition without any side effects, which are discussed further in the article.
