ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION

Cheyletiellosis is a very uncommon and highly contagious parasitic skin disease which is commonly seen in Dogs and cats, rabbits. These mites are about 0.385 mm long and have prominent hooks which live at the keratin level. In dogs, it is commonly due to a host named Cheyletiella yasguri where the adults of mites are present on the superficial layer of the skin. It usually resembles scabies or immunobullous disease. It was first diagnosed in animals in 1880 and is commonly accompanied by scaling and infections. A highly contagious disease is transmitted by an infected animal. The scaly patches provide a powdery coat appearance and are mainly found over the midline of the back. The lesions which are found include multiple red itchy bumps on the arms and trunk, buttocks. The life cycle includes three phases which are for three weeks, first, the female mites lay their eggs which are attached to the hair and are further followed by the nymphal stage, then the second nymphal stage and the end stage is the adult stage. Here the skin starts flaking which peels and leaves it swollen and itchy and the movement is visible to the naked eye.

CAUSES

This disorder is caused due to mite known as Cheyletiella mite and has various different species of mites which feed on it its family includes-

• Cats- Cheyletiella blakei
• Common rabbits- Cheyletiella parasitivorax
• Dogs-Cheyletiella yasguri

SYMPTOMS

• Dandruff appears as large flakes
• Pruritus
• Various bacterial infections
• Papular dermatitis
• Mimicking flea bite hypersensitivity
• Hair loss
• Red, bumpy rash
• Swollen skin

DIAGNOSIS

• It is easily seen under a microscope which is kept at low magnification.
• Physical examination

TREATMENT

• Topical insecticides
• Organophosphates
• 3-4 medicated baths once a week to remove scales and mites.

PREVENTION

• Regular bathing and washing of pets to keep dogs healthy and clean.
• Avoid excessive petting.
