What Is Primary Cutaneous Lichen Amyloidosis?
As Per Ayurveda Aspect:
Amyloidosis is caused due to the accumulation of ama (endotoxins) along with the vitiation of Kapha dosha in the body. The ama gets accumulated in the vessels and blocks the pathway which leads to the pain as well as inflammation.
As Per Modern Aspect:
Amyloidosis is among the group of diseases in which there is an accumulation of abnormal proteins in the various organs of the body including the skin.
In this condition, the clumps of abnormal proteins called amyloids build up in the skin which look like wave projections between the two layers of the skin i.e., dermis and epidermis. The main primary feature is the patches over the skin with abnormal color and texture.
It is characterized by the severely itchy patches and thickening of skin along with the multiple small bumps. These patches are scaly and reddish-brown, usually occur on the shins but may also occur on the forearms, legs and other parts of the body.
What are the Causes of Primary Cutaneous Lichen Amyloidosis?
The main cause of the primary cutaneous lichen amyloidosis is unknown. The most triggering factor is the repeated scratching and rubbing of the skin. The disease is not hereditary as it does not usually run in families but in 1 % of the population, there is a history of skin problem passing from parents to the child.
What are the Symptoms of Primary Cutaneous Lichen Amyloidosis?
Symptoms of primary cutaneous lichen amyloidosis may vary from person to person. They are characterized by the severe itchy patches and thickening of the skin with multiple small bumps. The skin becomes dry, scaly or in some cases, the skin may become loose and inelastic. Patients with atopic dermatitis or fungal infection have the highest chances of developing this disease.
How Primary Cutaneous Lichen Amyloidosis Can Be Diagnosed?
Skin biopsy can be taken under local anesthesia for the confirmation of the diagnosis. Other tests such as urine and blood tests can be done if it is necessary to investigate the associated disease.
How Does Primary Cutaneous Lichen Amyloidosis Look Like and What Is Its Differential Diagnosis?
Primary cutaneous amyloidosis generally involves macular amyloidosis, lichen amyloidosis, and nodular localized cutaneous amyloidosis.
Lichen Amyloidosis
These appear as clusters which are of red or brown colored scales that merge together to form a raised thickened area on the upper and lower limbs. The upper limbs and back region can also be affected.
Differential diagnosis Adnexal structures are not invaded in this disease but are invaded in other cases.
- Skin-colored papules located on the dorsa of the hands.
- Inflammation on the lower extremities which is related to chronic venous insufficiency.
- Thickening of the skin due to chronic skin exposure.
What Is the Best Treatment For Primary Cutaneous Lichen Amyloidosis?
Modern medicine generally prescribes histamines, corticosteroids, and treatment such as removal of superficial layers of skin. But in severe cases, there is an excision of the lesion but its recurrence is generally common and these medicines can cause harmful effects on the body.
