ABSTRACT

Bone cancer usually starts in the long bones of legs and arms or pelvis, however it can begin in any bone of the body. This is a rare type of cancer which comprises less than 1% of all types of cancer. Tumors which are non cancerous in nature are more common in the bones. INTRODUCTION TO BONE CANCER

Abnormal and uncontrolled growth of the cells in the bones is termed as bone cancer. Gradually these abnormally growing cancerous cells start destroying the normal cells of the bones. Over time bone cancer can spread to other parts of the body through metastasis. Tumors which are common in bones do not spread to other parts of the body but they weaken the bones and can lead to broken bones.

As per Ayurvedic concept cancer is called as Arbuda, i.e. major neoplasm and minor neoplasm. The three doshas, i.e. Vata, Pitta and kapha dosha are responsible for the balance of the health of a human being. CAUSES OF BONE CANCER

The exact cause behind the bone cancer is not known. However in some cases hereditary factors are found to be underlying while in others radiation exposure is in the history. Paget’s disease of bone in elderly people increases the risk of bone cancer in them.

TYPES OF BONE CANCER

There are different types of bone cancers depending upon the cell type in which the disease begins.

  1. Osteosarcoma – This is the most common type of cancer which affects young adults and children commonly. Long bones of the arms or legs. However in certain rare conditions osteosarcomas can also occur outside the bone which is called extraskeletal osteosarcoma.
  2. Chondrosarcoma – It is the second most common type of bone cancer where cartilage is formed by cancerous cells. Chondrosarcomas generally affect the bones of pelvis, arms or legs and older adults or middle aged people are usually affected by it.
  3. Ewing sarcoma – This type of bone cancer starts in the bones of legs, arms or pelvis and young adults and children are affected by it.

DIAGNOSIS OF BONE CANCER

Detailed history and physical examination of the patient by a doctor is the first step of diagnosis. Further for the confirmation of the condition certain tests are done like X-rays, CT scans, MRI scans, PET scan and Bone scans.
