Baldness: Ayurvedic Treatment, Causes, Symptoms
Abstract
Life isn’t perfect but your hair can be. But with increasing trend of looking stylish and cool many of youngsters use hair dyes, Keratin therapy, curling, ironing and other chemical based product on hair which will lead to the loss of natural component of the hair and thud resulting in premature greying of hair, dandruff, thinning of hair follicles. The increasing workload is another cause as stress is a major factor for the proper growth of hair. These all will lead to an ultimate condition where the complete loss of hair from the root is there. This condition is known as hair loss or Baldness.

Introduction
Baldness is also known as “Alopecia”. Baldness is absence of hairs or hair loss. The sternness of hair loss can extend from a small area to the entire body. The most common cause of Hair loss is hereditary hair loss with increase in age. Scarring and inflammation is not present. Hair loss is directly related to the way people look i.e. hairline loss which leads to more aged appearance. Men suffering from hair loss were more dissatisfied with their appearance and losing confidence. In modern science, various surgical treatments are used in the treatment of hair loss such as, Hair transplantation, laser therapy, scalp reduction etc.
Symptoms
Symptoms of Baldness may include:
- Patchy or circular bald spots:
Several people lose hair in Patchy or Circular spots on the scalp, eyebrows, or beard. Before the hair falls out, Skin becomes painful or itchy.
- Gradual thinning on top of head:
It is the most common type of hair loss, affecting people with increase in age.
- Full body hair loss:
Medical treatments and some conditions for example Chemotherapy for cancer leads to loss of hairs from all over the body.
- Sudden hair loss:
An emotional and physical shock can lead to hair loss. After gentle tugging, washing or combing, hair may come out.
- Scaling patches:
It is the indication of a ringworm. It may be conveyed by redness, swelling and broken hairs.
Causes
Hair loss is associated to the following factors:
- Medical Conditions and Hormonal Changes:
Hormonal changes due to Childbirth, pregnancy, menopause and thyroid problems, can cause temporary or permanent hair loss.
- Hereditary factor:
It is the most common cause of hair loss. This condition of hair loss is due to the family history or hereditary conditions that happen with increase in age. This situation is called androgenic alopecia.
- Supplements and Medications:
Excessive hair loss can be a side effect of several drugs that are used in the treatment of depression, cancer, arthritis, high blood pressure, gout etc.
- Radiation therapy of head:
After radiation therapy, hair loss can occur.
- Hairstyles and treatments:
Various kinds of treatments and hairstyles such as hot oil hair treatment, buns, ponytails can cause hairs to fall out.
Ayurvedic Aspect
Pitta in association with Vata dosha accumulate in pores leads to hair fall and kapha associated with rakta obstruct the pores inhibit the further hair growth in that region, this is called as “Indralupta”, “khalitya” or “Rujya”.
According to Ayurveda, “Asthi” or “bone tissue” is responsible for the development of hair. So bone strengthening medicines are prescribed in the treatment of baldness.
In Ayurveda, Alopecia or Baldness is entitled as “khalitya”. Main cause of baldness is the vitiation of pitta dosha in the body. Different types of asana are helpful in the treatment of alopecia such as Vajrasana, Sarvangasana, and Bhujangasana etc. These asanas improve the blood flow to the scalp region and prevent hair loss.
