Ayurvedic Treatment of Mitochondrial Dysfunction Disease
Abstract
Mitochondrial dysfunction disease is a very rare disease which is very specific to a part of a cell and are considered as a basic unit of energy for them in our body i.e. Mitochondria. In this article, we will be discussing about its signs and symptoms, causes, diagnosis and treatment as per Ayurveda. Which is a safe way and an efficient method to manage this disease.
Introduction
Mitochondrial dysfunction disease is a rare, progressive and often genetic disorder in which mitochondria’s ‘the power house of energy’ are unable to provide sufficient energy to the cells and hinders their regular activities and functions. This is an actually not a disease it is a disorder which involves various systems of our body at a stretch hence can be called as a syndrome. In this disease basically our mitochondria’s fails to produce energy. This disease can affect any part of our body like heart, kidneys, brain, lungs, liver, etc.
Usually it affects the new born or children’s and this disease is often mistaken for other diseases because the signs and symptoms of this disease are similar to various other systemic disorders. More cases of this disease are reported in United States and equally affect girls and boys. And of course it can affect adults also.
As per Ayurveda, this condition is Tridoshaj vyadhi where all the tridoshas (Vata, Pitta and Kapha) are equally involved. Here, our Anuvanshika karna’s (Hereditary factors), Saptadhatus (All seven dhatus), Trimalas (Three byproducts) along with Agni (Digestive fire) are involved which impairs the functioning of our body’s cells.
So, before going in detail about the disease let’s discuss – What are Mitochondria and what is their Role in Our Body?
What is Mitochondria and Its Role In Our Body?
Mitochondria are an organelle which is considered as a power house of the cell and provides energy to perform their normal functions in our body and it is present in most of the Eukaryotes. This power generator converts Oxygen and nutrients into ATP (Adenosine triphosphate) which are responsible to carry out all the metabolic activities of the cells. As stated earlier Mitochondria are present in all the Eukaryotic organisms but human body needs large amount of energy to carry out all the activities in the body so, their proper and adequate functioning is required to survive. A cell may contain a single to thousand Mitochondria to perform its functions. So, now we are clear that how important is this small structure in our body.
Causes of Mitocondrial Dysfunction Disease
The causes of defect in these rod shaped organelles (Mitochondria) are:
- Alleviated electrical potential and chemicals of the inner mitochondrial membrane.
- Reduced neurotransmitter which activates them to supply energy.
- Genetic involvement is quite high in this disease and is often inherited one.
- History of diseases like muscular dystrophy, Alzheimer’s disease, etc will cause this disease as a secondary complication.
- Long term history of Diabetes, HTN, etc will act as a triggering factor for this disease.
- Mutation in the genes is a causative factor for this disease.
Symptoms of Mitocondrial Dysfunction Disease
The symptoms of this disease are quite similar to all the chronic diseases which results into weakness and fatigue. And it depends upon the cell type which got affected.
- The main symptom of this disease is weakness and fatigue.
- Delayed milestones and poor growth.
- Reduced ability to grasp, vision impairment and mental retardation.
- As it may involve any organ in our body may arise problems related to muscles, kidneys, heart, lungs, liver, brain, etc. and develops signs and symptoms to the affected system.
- Hinder the activities of the person.
- Sluggish movement and reduced metabolism.
Diagnosis of Mitocondrial Dysfunction Disease
It is a progressive condition which will worse with time so needs early treatment but the diagnosis of this disease is a challenging one because the symptoms are similar of various diseases. This disease can be purely diagnosed on the basis of following test:
- Genetic testing for Mitochondrial DNA
- Nuclear DNA for genes
- Muscle biopsy
- Biochemical tests on CSF, urine and blood
- MRI of brain and spinal cord
- Electrocardiogram
Treatment of Mitocondrial Dysfunction Disease
As per current Modern system of medicine, Vitamins and Minerals supplements are the only source along with the medicines for the system which is involved is the only option, which will actually support this condition but unable to eradicate the root cause. And usually, more than 1 system is involvement often reported in such conditions.
On the other hand, Ayurveda the Ancient treasure which helps to tackle various life – threatening diseases effectively with the help of its potential natural herbs has a good contribution in managing this disease. Ayuvedic management helps to reduce the symptoms and can work over the root level of this disease. Rasayana herbs are effective in this condition.
Planet Ayurveda offers its best to deal with mitochondrial dysfunctional disease and provides its 100% pure herbo-mineral combinations to deal with such diseases. All the formulations are prepared from standardized extracts and from pure quality of herbs. For this disease Planet Ayurveda recommends following medicines:
- Kumar Kaylan Ras
- Brahmi Chyawanprash
- Energo Plan Syrup
- Neuro Plan Syrup
1. Kumar Kalyan Ras
This is a classical formulation which is prepared from Swarna bhasma (purified gold), Mukta bhasma (purified peals), etc. This medicine has a direct effect on our neurotransmitters which stimulates the activities of Mitochondria’s to produce ATP’s.
Dosage: 1 tablet once daily, after meals with normal water.
2. Brahmi Chyawaprash
This is a perfect combination of herbslie- Brahmi, dashmoola Bala, Rishbak, Vidarikanda, Kesar, etc which helps to boost immunity and the functions of the body. Moreover, these herbs help to bring balance in all the vitiated Tridoshas which imbalance is the main cause of this disease.
Dosage: 1 teaspoonful twice daily, after meals with milk or normal water.
3. Energo Plan Syrup
This syrup is prepared from the herbal extract of herbs such as Jeevanti (Leptadenia reticulata), Amla (Emblica officinalis), Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus), Shigru (Moringa oleifera), etc. This is effective emerging boosting herbal syrup which helps to correct the energy levels in the body and enhance the activities of mitochondrias. Also helps the body from the oxidative damage and enhance the immunity to tackle this disease.
Dosage: 2 teaspoonful twice daily, after meals with normal water.
4. Neuro Plan Syrup
This herbal syrup is a combination of Mndukaparni (Centella asiatica), Jyotishmati (Celastrus paniculatus), Madhuyashti (Glycyrrhiza glabra), Shankhpushpi (Convolvulus pluricaulis), Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), etc to boost the functions of the neurons. It initiates the process of ATP production by stimulating the mitochondria. It also eliminates the endotoxins (Ama) from the cells and clears them and makes the internal environment suitable for cells to function better and also improves the metabolic activities of the cells. As all these are neuro tonics so, improves the higher mental functions and keeps you active.
Dosage: 2 teaspoonful twice daily, after meals with normal water.
Rest, the medicines required as per the involvement of the system in this disease.
