Ayurvedic Treatment of Meniscus Tear and ACL injury
Abstract
Meniscus tear and ACL injury is a concern of the knee joint. Knee joint is the strongest joint in the body as it bears the overall weight of the body. This is a hinge type of synovial joint which is helpful or allows the knee joint for flexion and extension. This joint is formed by the articulation of patella, femur and tibia. Also this is the one of the largest and most complex joints in the body. Tendons and ligaments hold the knee joint and also meniscus act as a shock absorber between the femur and tibia. But in this article we are going to discuss meniscus tear and ACL injury and its ayurvedic management in detail.
Firstly let’s talk about Meniscus
There are two C-shaped pieces of cartilage called meniscus. One is medial and the second one is lateral meniscus. These menisci of the knee are two pads of fibrocartilaginous tissue which act or serve as shock absorbers between the shin bone (Tibia) and the thigh (Femur). These meniscus are concave on the top and flat on the bottom and articulate with the shin bone. They disperse the weight of the body and reduce friction during walking or any movement.
What is a meniscus tear?
Like other knee injuries, meniscus tear can be painful and debilitating. This injury is quite common, in fact this is one of the frequently occurring cartilage injuries.
Causes of meniscus tear
- Forcefully twist your knee
- Aggressive or sudden stops and turns of the knee joint
- Heavy lifting
- Deep squatting
- Degenerative changes
- Harsh physical movements like running, high jump, long jump etc
Signs and symptoms
If someone has meniscus tear then he or she might have following signs and symptoms
- Swelling
- Stiffness
- Pain (Especially twisting or rotating the knee)
- Difficulty in doing flexion and extension
- Burning sensation in knee joint
Now we are going to discuss ACL
ACL means Anterior Cruciate Ligament. There are basically four types of ligaments in the knee joint i.e. Anterior cruciate ligament, Posterior cruciate ligament, Medial collateral ligament and Lateral collateral ligament. But in this section we are going to discuss only the anterior cruciate ligament. ACL is one of a pair of cruciate ligaments in a knee joint. They are arranged in a crossed manner and hence called as cruciform ligament. The role of this ligament is to resist the movement of tibial translation and tibial rotation. This ACL provides stability to the knee joint.
What is ACL injury?
This injury is a tear or sprain of the anterior cruciate ligament. This most commonly occurs during sports which involve sudden stop or jerk to the knee joint. About half of the injuries of the ACL involve damage to the other structures in the knee joint.
Causes of ACL injury
Most of the ACL injury is a result of a non-contact mechanism. ACL injuries often occur during sports and athletic events that can put pressure on the knee joint.
Possible causes are
- Sudden stop after running
- Sudden change of direction during running
- High jump
- Direct blow to the knee or collision to the knee joint
Sign and symptoms
When someone has ACL injury then the patient shows following signs and symptoms
- Popping noise
- Pain and swelling
- Restricted knee movement
- Tenderness
- Feeling discomfort while walking
Diagnosis of Meniscus tear and ACL injury
Diagnosis is made on the basis of patient history and physical examination.
- In patient history, doctor will ask about your symptoms and medical history
- In a physical examination, a doctor will check the injured part of the knee and compare the injured knee with a non-injured knee.
Imaging test for the diagnosis of the knee injury are
MRI: Magnetic resonance imaging is the effective imaging technique to diagnose meniscus and ACL injury, because X-rays will not show any injury to ligaments and Meniscus.
