Abstract

The central nervous system is the main system of our body that manages all the functionings in the human body. Diseases of the central nervous system are many due to various causes. Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis is a disease of the central nervous system that occurs due to the involvement of a Virus. The disease mainly affects children and young adults of age between 5 to 15 years. The virus may be present in an activated form or an inactive form in the body. This disease is usually fatal and needs very careful evaluation and treatment. Progression of the disease can also lead to death in many children. In this article, we will discuss the causes, symptoms, diagnostic methods, and treatment of Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis in modern and Ayurveda.

Introduction

Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis is defined as a neurological disorder that affects the nerves of the central nervous system. This is a viral infection that is caused by Paramyxovirus which is responsible for measles infection. The disease starts in childhood and the child starts showing abnormal symptoms from the age of four to five years. The risk of developing Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis is more in children who had measles disease earlier in life. In many cases, the virus remains in the brain in an inactive state and does not cause any problem, while in some cases the inactive virus activates and causes SSPE. The symptoms of the SSPE disease need to be differentiated from other brain-related disorders in the child.

Causes

Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis is caused by a virus called Paramyxovirus. This is a virus that also causes measles in the human body.

Diagnosis

The diagnosis of Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis is done through laid criteria- According to the criteria, if the child shows any three of the following five symptoms, then the diagnosis is confirmed-

Clinical presentation with progressive intellectual deterioration
Characteristic Electroencephalographic patterns (EEG)
Elevated globulin levels in Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)
Elevated measles titers in Cerebrospinal fluid
Brain biopsy (of measles)

Treatment

According to the research, there is no effective treatment for Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis and there is no cure for it.
