Abstract
Pancreatitis is a very common disease. Pancreatitis may vary in severity from mild self limiting infection to pancreatitis necrosis, which is a life threatening condition. It can be acute and chronic. Pancreas is an organ of the digestive system. It is located in the abdomen behind the stomach and it mostly regulates blood sugar level, secretes insulin hormone etc. It secretes digestive juices into the small intestine through a tube called the pancreatic duct. Let’s discuss this in detail.
Introduction
Pancreatitis is the inflammation of the pancreas. Its incidents are increasing. Pancreatitis is usually temporary(acute), but can also be a life- long(chronic) condition. There are two types of pancreatitis- Acute and Chronic. Acute pancreatitis occurs suddenly and goes away with treatment. Chronic pancreatitis is most commonly due to many years of alcohol use. Symptoms of pancreatitis are upper abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting etc. Most common cause for this inflammation is gallstones and alcohol consumption. According to Ayurveda, pancreatitis can be correlated to Agnyashaya shotha. It may occur due to an imbalance between vata and pitta dosha. The line of treatment in this condition is virechana(therapeutic purgation)

Ayurvedic Point of View
According to ayurveda udara roga (diseases of the abdomen) is tridoshaja vyadhi. The main cause of udara roga is agni dushti(abnormal function of digestive fire). Healthy state of body and diseased condition depends on agni. Jatharagni(digestive fire) is very important because it helps in secretion of various chemicals and enzymes which helps in proper digestion. As per ayurveda, pitta can be considered as agni. Pachak pitta which is one of the types of pitta that can correlate to gastrointestinal enzymes like bile, pancreatic juices etc. Pancreatitis can be correlated to Agnyashaya shotha. It may occur due to an imbalance between vata and pitta dosha. Pitta is involved in causing inflammation. This condition can occur due to harmful dietary habits like intake of hot spicy food, alcohol consumption etc. Pathaya(do’s) in Agnyashaya shotha is mild exercise, eating easily digestive food etc. Apathya(don’ts) is alcohol, non- veg, heavy food, spicy food etc. Ayurvedic treatment in this condition has positive results. The best treatment for pitta and udara roga is virechana (therapeutic purgation) therefore Mridu virechan is indicated here. The medications which are useful in this condition are amalaki rasayana, chandraprabha vati, shankha vati etc.
