Abstract

What is Hydrocele ?

The term hydrocele basically refers to accumulation of serous fluid in body cavities. Hydrocele is usually signified by a fluid – filled sac present in the scrotum which can be due to severe disease. This fluid retention is due to improper absorption or secretion. Various  studies have shown that this condition is generally painless but may lead to complications related to psychological or physical health. It has been estimated or physical health. What are the types of Hydrocele ?

Generally hydrocele are of following major types i.e. Primary, secondary non – communicating, secondary communicating, inflammatory, trauma – induced, congenital, giant and canal of nuck. Let’s discuss in brief the main types –

1. Primary Hydrocele

In this type, hydroceles are usually painless, soft, non-gender  and get bigger in size. This results in accumulation of fluid in larger quantities and may remain asymptomatic.

2. Secondary Hydrocele

It is believed to occur because of various testicular diseases, hernia (cancer trauma) or inflammation (orchitis). Even infants which are undergoing peritoneal dialysis can get affected with this type. Some of the known causes for the onset of secondary type include acute or chronic epididymo-orchitis, testicular tumor, filarial hydrocele, post herniorrhaphy or torsion of testis. This type include further two types

  • Communicating hydrocele: In this type the sac aroused testicle doesn’t block all the way and which allows the fluid to flow.
  • Non – communicating hydrocele: On the other hand in non – communicating hydrocele sac surrounding the testis closes and the fluid gets absorbed by the body gradually with time.

What are the causes of Hydrocele ?

Although, the reason for the onset of hydrocele depends on the type. But the most common cause is the disrupted functioning of the lymphatic system. If a person has undergone some surgery like laparoscopic varicocelectomy can result in partial or complete description of drainage in the testicular lymphatic system. This imbalance in drainage and input can complicate the condition. Hydrocele can also cause after renal transplantation and testicular complications. Hydrocele of canal of buck which is also known as female hydrocele or cyst of canal of buck which is usually seen in infant females and is mostly painless or can transform into painful swelling. In this way parasitic hydrocele and filarial hydrocele originated because of hydatid cysts, filariasis and Wuchereria bancrofti respectively.

What are the Signs and Symptoms in  Hydrocele ?

Generally, hydrocele is only characterized by swelling in one or both testicles which is usually painless. In some it may give a water filled like appearance which naturally is discomforting. If a person is feeling severe pain then it might be the possibility that person is infected from infections or testicular torsion. In severe situations the swelling might get worse in morning time as compared to evening.

How do Hydroceles get Diagnosed ?

In order to diagnose hydrocele, doctors will follow physical examination and check the swelling and tenderness in the scrotal region. Presence of fluid in the scrotum can be determined using a transilluminator. Some clinical and differential diagnosis will include inguinal hernia, ultrasound and any scrotal swelling.

What can be the Complications Involved in Hydrocele ?

Some of the complications that might occur due to worsening of hydrocele might include calcification of sac, severe infections, pyocele, atrophy, post herniorrhaphy, herniation and rupture (due to some trauma).

Precautions

Some of the precautionary steps in hydrocele are given below-

  1. Adults need to be very careful from injury in genital areas.
  2. Person should avoid strenuous activities which can put pressure on the scrotum.
  3. Keep a check in constipation and cough because it may increase intra-abdominal pressure.
  4. One should avoid straining the groin area and stop doing strenuous physical activities for sometime.

  1. Avoid taking packaged or canned fruit juices instead eat fresh fruits like apples, grapes, oranges, peaches, etc.
  2. One should eat fresh vegetables and freshly cooked food.
  3. You should totally cut off beverages like tea and coffee.
  4. Stop intake of alcohol and quit smoking.
  5. Don’t consume deep fried and processed food items.
  6. You can apply ice packs to reduce pain and swelling.
  7. Wear loose clothes as tight clothes may put pressure.
  8. Regular practise of some specific yogasana can help to stay fit.
  9. Amla and wheat grass juice can be proved beneficial.
