Abstract

Introduction

Blepharospasm is a focal dystonia that causes increased blinking and involuntary closing of the eyelids. Blpehro here means eyelids and spasm means sudden involuntary muscular contractions or muscle twitching. Blepharospasm can be easily explained as the difficulty to open the eyelids. In ayurveda the condition is directly related to vartama roga. Under vartam roga, acharya Vagbhatta has mentioned it as Kruchronmeelana. It is also mentioned that the condition is the result of vata dosha aggravation. In Ayurveda there are some peculiar things which are mentioned under its treatment. Causes Of Blepharospasm

The factors that trigger the blepharospasm are as follows:

  • Severely dry eyes
  • Blepharitis
  • Intraocular inflammation
  • Meningeal irritation
  • Light sensitivity
  • Stress
  • Certain medications as well

Symptoms Related To Blepharospasm

  • It begins at the age of 40s, 50s and 60s
  • Pain — Which is of pricking nature
  • Foreign body sensation — sensation is mostly like there is sand particles in your eyes
  • Watering of eyes
  • Feeling of relaxation when one rubs the eyes
  • Squinting is also included
  • Heaviness in eyelids, pain and tension around the eyes
  • Difficulty keeping your eyes open

Such symptoms are at low intensity in the starting but as time passes and things are ignored for longer then the intensity may become severe.

Diagnosing Blepharospasm

  • The diagnosis generally depends upon the clinical examination.
  • In this case laboratory tests are of no utility.

Treatment Of Blepharospasm

The treatment for blepharospasm includes the following:

  • Some injectable medicines like botox which is a brand name for botulinum toxin. It can reverse the muscle condition by reducing the twitching.
  • Some oral medicines are also given for a short span of time.
  • In very severe cases, myectomy is done to treat symptoms. Myectomy is a procedure in which the muscles and nerves of the eyelids are removed.

In ayurveda if we discuss the treatment of Blepharospasm then blepharospasm can be treated by following ways:

  • As mentioned the condition is the result of excess of vata dosha in the body and to subside this vata dosha aggravation vata hara chikitsa is done. Here vata hara means pacification of vata dosha.
  • In Sweden, steaming can be done.
  • Vasti or medicated enema can also be given.
  • Snigdha nasya which is the administration of oil in the form of drops in the nasal opening (both sides).
  • Snigdha dhooma, it is inhalation of medicated smoke
  • Snigdha anjana, that is application of unctuous preparation applied over lower palpebral conjunctiva. It helps in glorifying the eyes.
  • Akshi tarpan can also be done using medicated ghee or clarified butter prepared with draksha (raisins) kalka (paste).

2. Ashwagandhaghan Vati

Ashwagandhaghan vati is manufactured from ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) alone. The product is having results in muscle twitching and fatigue.
