Ayurvedic Perspective of Ureaplasma Infection

According to Ayurveda, the disturbance in apan vayu results in urinary problems whose main function is elimination of urine. The main focus of Ayurveda is the removal of blockages in the urinary tract and management of the problem of urethritis and infection in the body. There is a similar disease named as Mootrakruchhra which has various types in Ayurveda, which are as follow –

  • Pittaj mootrakruchhra – It is due to the imbalance of pitta dosha. Symptoms include – Reddish and yellowish urine with burning sensation.
  • Vataj mootrakruchhra – It is due to imbalance of vata dosha. Symptoms include – Intense pain in pelvic region and difficulty in urination.
  • Kaphaj mootrakruchhra – It is due to the imbalance of kapha dosha.  Symptoms include –  Turbid  urine and inflammation in the pelvic region.
  • Sannipatik mootrakruchhra – It is the result of imbalance of all three doshas namely pitta, vata and kapha.

How it transmits – Transmission sources are as follow –

  1. Through sexual contact – Ureaplasma can be passed during sexual contact, it can enter the body through the vagina or the urethra and is very common among sexually active adults and the persons having multiple sexual partners. However, it may also be found in women who have never been sexually active.
  2. Vertical/Perinatal transmission (From mother to fetus – These bacteria may also be passed to a fetus or newborn if the mother has Ureaplasma infection during pregnancy but he infection usually goes away within a few months.
  3. Due to a weak immune system – People with a weak immune system have the highest risk of Ureaplasma infection like – HIV-positive people and people who have had an organ transplant.

Clinical Features

In most of the cases, it does not present with any sign and symptom but in some of the cases it can present with –

  • Pelvic or abdominal pain– Ureaplasma causes pain in the pelvic, abdominal and groin area.
  • Urethritis – It is the inflammation of the Urethra, which can occur in  Both men and women. Its symptoms include – Discharge, Pain and burning sensation during urination.
  • Bacterial vaginosis – Ureaplasma can cause bacterial vaginosis. Its symptoms include – Watery vaginal discharge with an unpleasant vaginal odor.
  • Prostatitis – It is an inflammation of the prostate gland, which causes – Cloudy or bloody urine, pain in the genital area, difficulty during urination and urgent need to urinate.
  • Endometritis – It is an inflammation of the lining of the womb, which causes – Abnormal vaginal bleeding or discharge, pelvic pain and fever.
  • Kidney stones – Ureaplasma can also lead to the formation of kidney stones in some people. Symptoms include – Severe pain in the abdomen, lower back and the pelvic area, fever, cloudy, bloody or foul-smelling urine and problems urinating.

How to Diagnose this Condition 

If you are experiencing symptoms and all other problems, the doctor can perform some tests to rule out the condition. These diagnostic tests can be – Urine sample, Cervical swab, Endometrial swab or Endometrial biopsy.

How to prevent this 

The only way to prevent this infection is abstinence. Some preventive measures are as follow –

  • Practice safe sex – It will significantly reduce the risk of getting this infection and other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).
  • Use barrier methods – Like condoms and dental dams to prevent infection.
