Abstract

Introduction
Autoimmune lymphoproliferative syndrome or ALPS is an inherited lymphoid disorder. This disorder is the result of mutations in the molecules that are involved in Fas-Fas ligand pathway. Fas and Fas ligands are the two molecules that are involved in cell death regulation. The disorder is also considered to be inherited thus resulting in mutation of molecules included in fas-fas ligand pathway. The condition does not present with any type of malignancy that is cancerous enlargement of lymphoid organs. If we understand this disease in an easy manner then the condition is characterised by the production of abnormally large numbers of lymphocytes or lymphoproliferation. The condition is capable of producing damage to kidney cells, liver cells, skin problems and also can produce damage to nerves.
Causes of Autoimmune Lymphoproliferative Syndrome (ALPS)
The cause in 75% of the population remains the same and that is mutation in the FAS gene. FAS gene mutation is responsible for producing a protein. This protein is involved in cell signalling and this signalling thus results in self destruction of cells. This process of self destruction of cells is called apoptosis. This FAS protein is located at the long arm of Chromosome 10.
Symptoms of Autoimmune Lymphoproliferative Syndrome (ALPS)
The most common sign in this condition is lymphoproliferation. Due to an increase in the proliferation of lymphoid cells, the situation causes an increase in size of lymphoid organs.
