Alternative Medicines for Villous Adenoma ( Colorectal Cancer)

Abstract

The large intestine which is also known as the large bowel is one of the important parts of the GIT (gastrointestinal tract). It helps in removing waste products from the body in the form of feces. The largest portion of the large intestine is the colon and it is divided into six sections including the cecum, ascending colon, transverse colon, descending colon, sigmoid colon, and rectum. The colon starts from the end of the small intestine and starts from the cecum end at the rectum. Cancer of the large intestine is better known as colorectal cancer or also villous adenoma. In this article, we are going to talk about Villous adenoma in detail and how it can be managed through herbal medicines.

What is Villous Adenoma?

Villous adenoma which is also known as colorectal cancer which is commonly seen in the lining of the intestine where the healthy cells start to grow rapidly. These tumor or adenomatous polyps are commonly neoplastic and if histologically classified they are said to be tubular adenoma or villous adenoma. In these cases, there are greater chances of developing malignancy in the latter stages of the disease. An adenomatous polyp is one of the common types of polyp seen in the colon and its increases by age. They are mainly characterized by a finger-like epithelial projection which is seen in 75% of cases. It is mostly seen in the rectosigmoid area and the patient typically presents symptoms like hematuria, vomiting, etc. Male is mostly seen with Villous adenoma as compared to females.

Histology:- It is important to know the degree of dysplasia found in the adenoma which may differ from patient to patient. The degree of dysplasia is found through cytological study and it can range from low to high-grade dysplasia. As proven by the studies they are low-grade type dysplasia. The cytological study suggests that low-grade dysplasia involves the crowded, pseudo stratification which occupies the basal half of the cytoplasm.

  8. Discomfort in the abdomen

In the early stages of the disease, most of the patients do not show any symptoms and the signs may vary depending on the size of the tumor.

What are the Causes?

There is no specific cause for the Villous adenoma but there are some risk factors that can lead to colorectal including

  1. Excessive smoking
  2. Obese
  3. Intake of Alcohol
  4. Acromegaly
  5. Genetic factors
  6. Health problems like Inflammatory bowel disease
  7. Patients who suffer from acromegaly are at greater risk

Treatment

According to Allopathy before giving treatment it is important to know the location and severity of the disease. Normally the treatment given to these patients is Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS). They help in decreasing the number of colonic polyps along with their size. However, they are not proven to prevent cancer and along with that chemotherapies are also given. Along with that, these medications bring side effects that sometimes make the condition worse.

In Ayurveda it Villous adenoma is caused due to aggravated Pitta which leads to Dusti of Vata Dosha. By providing herbal medicine the toxins can be removed which will purify the body tissue and treat cancer. Not only that they remove the root cause of the disease making the condition healthy.
