Ayurvedic Concept Of Hereditary Motor Sensory Neuropathy

ABSTRACT

The proper transmission of nerve impulse is essential for the healthy functioning of the body. The nervous system plays a vital role in almost all the bodily functions. Any hindrance in the structure and functioning of the nerves will deplete the signal and impulse transmission. There are various conditions that can deplete the state of the nerves and one such group of diseases is hereditary motor sensory neuropathy (HMSN). It contains various disorders that adversely affect the nerves of the body and present various features. This Hereditary motor sensory neuropathy (HMSN) will be described in detail in the following article.

Hereditary Motor Sensory Neuropathy

INTRODUCTION

Hereditary motor sensory neuropathy (HMSN) is also named as Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) hereditary neuropathy. Almost every 1 in 2500 individuals suffer from this condition. As the name suggests, Hereditary motor sensory neuropathy (HMSN) is a hereditary condition in which there is abnormality in the nerves. These are a group of disorders presenting long term sensory and motor nerve damage or polyneuropathy. It is progressive condition that badly affects the nerves of the body. This results in numbness and weakness in various parts of the body. The legs are affected more as compared to the arms and hands. Males are more prone to the condition of Hereditary motor sensory neuropathy (HMSN) as compared to females. The chance of getting or developing Hereditary motor sensory neuropathy (HMSN) is 50% if one parent has it. But, in some cases, it may be present randomly. The causes underlying the condition of Hereditary motor sensory neuropathy (HMSN) are described as follows.

CAUSES OF HEREDITARY MOTOR SENSORY NEUROPATHY

Hereditary motor sensory neuropathy (HMSN) is inherited through genetic composition. The individual with a family history of Hereditary motor sensory neuropathy (HMSN) is at a high risk of suffering from it. Due to this, the condition of nerve cells deteriorates. This further results in decreased impulse transmission to the various parts of the body and hence resulting in weakness and numbness. The symptoms will differ from patient to patient and will be described as follows.

SYMPTOMS OF HEREDITARY MOTOR SENSORY NEUROPATHY

Hereditary motor and sensory neuropathies (HMSN) or Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) hereditary neuropathies are a group of clinically and genetically heterogeneous disorders primarily affecting the peripheral nervous system of the body. The symptoms of Hereditary motor and sensory neuropathies (HMSN) will vary from patient to patient. Hereditary motor and sensory neuropathies (HMSN) presents with a slowly progressive condition that is characterized by the gradual weakness of the legs which slowly keeps progressing upwards, followed by involvement of hands also in some cases. There are different types of presentation in the Hereditary motor and sensory neuropathies (HMSN) such as –

  • Demyelinating (CMT1) – In these cases, there is atrophy and weakness in muscles along with the sensory loss. These changes are slowly progressive and can present with various deformities of the foot or even bilateral foot drop in some cases. The symptoms of these types of patients can be observed usually between the ages of five years and 25 years. The longevity of life is usually not hindered.
  • Axonal (non-demyelinating) (CMT 2) – In this case, there was muscle weakness along with atrophy. Axonal peripheral neuropathy can be very commonly confused with demyelinating peripheral neuropathy due to a very high rate of similarity. It is observed that the ones suffering from axonal neuropathy are likely to be less disabled and have less sensory loss as compared to the ones with demyelinating neuropathy.
  • Dominant intermediate CMT (DI-CMT) – This type shows vast differences even in the same family. There can be variations in the same family as few might be suffering from the demyelinating neuropathy range, while others might be a victim of the axonal neuropathy range.

DIAGNOSIS AND MANAGEMENT OF HEREDITARY MOTOR SENSORY NEUROPATHY

To diagnose the condition of Hereditary motor and sensory neuropathies (HMSN), detailed clinical evaluation is required. The patient should be evaluated in detail for the presenting features as explained earlier. He/she must be analyzed for the muscle atrophy, sensory responses and muscle weakness along with the detailed history of the patient’s medical condition. DNA tests can be performed to diagnose the condition and EMG (electromyography) can also be done to assess the condition of the muscles. The management of the Hereditary motor and sensory neuropathies (HMSN) will require practicing physical and occupational therapies, strengthening the muscles etc. or even surgery is required in some cases to manage the condition. Let’s discuss the ayurvedic perspective of the Hereditary motor and sensory neuropathies (HMSN).

AYURVEDIC ASPECT OFHEREDITARY MOTOR SENSORY NEUROPATHY

The principles of ayurveda considers the equilibrium between the three dosha (vata, pitta, kapha) to be the pillars of a healthy body. The vata dosha is said to be responsible for the movements in the body and also for the normal functioning of the nervous system. In the condition of Hereditary motor and sensory neuropathies (HMSN), the main aim of management will be to improve the state of nerves. Balancing the vata dosha will improve the strength of the nerves and the brain. To accomplish this goal and restabilise the dosha in its normal levels, various ayurvedic herbal preparations such as ashwagandha ghan vati, atirasadi churna, kumari saar, musli strength, etc. can be used. These formulations will be described in detail in the following content.
