1. Medhya rasayan

The rasayan which are used for enhancing the mental ability of a person to the top . The four best medhya Rasayan mentioned by Acharya Charak in Charaka Chikitsa chapters 1 are

  1. Mandukaparni swarasa  (Centella asiatica’s liquid extract)
  2. Yashtimadhu churna (Powder of Glycyrrhiza glabra)
  3. Shankhpushpi kalka (Paste form of Convolvulus  pluricaulis)
  4. Guduchi  kwath (decoction of  Tinospora cordifolia)

These herbs will help in enhancing the dhee (intelligence), dhriti (grasping power), samriti (retaining power). Also, other than these four herbs various other herbs such as brahmi (Bacopa monnieri), Vacha (Acorus calamus) and all other madhur vipaki and sheet virya dravya are considered as medhya & having Rasayan properties.

2. Naimittika Rasayana

These are the Rasayans which are specifically indicated for the concerned diseased condition. Few examples of these are

  1. Bhallataka Rasayan for kapha related disorders.
  2. Khadir & gandhak Rasayan for Kushta etc. skin disorders
  3. Haritaki Rasayan for pandu roga (anemic conditions), arsh (hemorrhoids) & gulma (abdominal tumors)
  4. Pippali Rasayan and chyawanprash Rasayan for Respiratory ailments & tuberculosis conditions.
  5. Gambhari Rasayan for pitta related and bleeding diseases.
  6. Medhya Rasayan for mind related disorders.
  7. Triphala Rasayan for skin, abdominal & eyes related diseases.

3. Aajstrik Rasayana

This particular division of Rasayan consists of those dietary items which a human can include in their daily life to achieve the topmost results of Rasayan. These include use of milk, ghee, seasonal fruits, honey, fresh water etc.

3. Achara rasayana

This unique concept of Rasayan is given by Acharya Charka. It includes some behavioral changes that will cumulatively lead to the achievement of rejuvenating properties of Rasayan on their regular use. Some of these activities include

  1. Speaking the truth.
  2. Resentment
  3. Avoidance of alcohol abuse
  4. Following celibacy or avoid overindulging in sexual activities.
  5. Sacrifice of violence from body, mind & words.
  6. Follow the path of calmness patience, and spirituality
  7. Avoidance of overconfidence & narrow minded thoughts.
  8. Try controlling the senses
  9. Maintain regular sleep and wake up cycle
  10. Respect the elders.
