ITP Remedies And Treatment – Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura

Abstract

ITP is a Platelet Disorder. Platelets are small, colourless cells present in our blood. Platelets are responsible for clotting. These are made in the bone marrow of the body. They are tiny blood cells that help in blood clotting after injury to stop bleeding. If blood vessels get damaged, it sends a signal so that platelets can plug to fix the damage to the vessels. There are various disorders of platelets like Gaucher’s disease, hemolytic-uremic syndrome, aplastic anemia, gilbert’s syndrome, idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, etc. But in this article we will discuss the autoimmune disorder that is immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) and herbal remedies of ITP.

Introduction

Idiopathic thrombocytopenic Purpura is an autoimmune disorder that affects the clotting factor. ITP can lead to easy bruises and excessive bleeding followed by any injury. This is a bleeding disorder in which there is a low number of platelets and because of this blood does not form any plug (clot) after injury. People who are suffering from ITP often have purple bruises over the skin called Purpura. In this condition, there are pinpoint sized clots over or under the skin which are called petechiae. Petechiae may look like a rash. The exact cause for this condition is unknown.

ITP-Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura

Ayurvedic View on ITP

By seeing the symptoms of this condition we can simply correlate this disease with teeryakgat raktapitta. Raktam ch pittam ch iti raktapitta (Chakkarpani) this means that when blood is vitiated by vitiated pitta then it is called Raktapitta. Acharya Charak mentioned that when a person is start taking diet which is ushna (hot), tikta (bitter), amal (alkaline), lavana (salty) and katu (sour) in taste, Vidahi annapan (Contaminated food), Atiatapa sevan (Excessive exposure to sunlight), Consumption of salty and alkaline products with milk can lead to cause teeryakgat raktapitta and then they are having symptoms like bleeding from the opening of the body like nose, eyes, anus, penis, vagina, mouth ear and also bleeding from hair follicles, colour of the bleed blood is blackish, smooth, viscous and somewhat frothy.

Etiology / Causes

The exact cause of ITP is not known. It usually happens when the immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys platelet cells. This may be triggered by some infections also. This is common in young women and also attacks those patients who are having other autoimmune diseases such as Rheumatoid arthritis, lupus and antiphospholipid syndrome.

Clinical Features / Signs and Symptoms

A person who is suffering from ITP may show the following symptoms:

  • Easy or excessive bruising
  • Superficial bleeding into the skin
  • Bleeding from gums or nose
  • Blood in urine or stools
  • Unusually heavy menstrual bleeding

Diagnosis

To diagnose this disease, a doctor will try to rule out all the possible causes of the bleeding and a low platelet count such as any disease or medications you are having. Also a doctor might need a bone marrow examination to rule out the exact cause of ITP.

Chikitsa Of Teeryakagata Raktapitta (Treatment)

Ayurveda is an ancient science which deals with every health problem. This ancient holistic medical science believes in two principles i.e. to protect the healthy person from diseases and to treat the patient from diseases. Now let’s just discuss the Ayurvedic treatment part in detail. Acharya Charaka said that the teerayakagatta raktapitta is an incurable disease because of its chronicity.

But don’t you worry, our Acharya also said that we can convert the incurable diseases into difficult to treat states. If we treat those diseases with full interest and awareness then an incurable disease may become treatable. Acharya Charak mentioned that if a person is not emaciated and weak and also takes normal food then it should not be checked in the very beginning means do not stop the bleeding at the very first attempt.

Basically Raktapitta is caused by Aama dosha then it should be managed by a detoxification process along with oral medicines. For the treatment or management of teeryakgat raktapitta disease, we should follow the strict Ayurvedic principles:

  1. Nidana Parivarjana (Abstinence the Etiological Factors)
  2. Samshodhana Chikitsa (Detoxification Therapy)
  3. Samshamana Chikitsa (Conservative Therapy)

  • Vaman (Induce vomiting)
  • Virechan (Induce Purgation)
  • Niruha-vasti (Unctuous Enema)
  • Anuvasana vasti (Non-Unctuous Enema)
