Herbal Remedies for PML Virus(Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy)

Abstract

Viral infections are like hijackers that can invade inside and can multiply in numbers. They have the ability to kill, change and even damage the cells that can make the person very sick. There are different types of viruses that can affect different parts of the body and sometimes lead to fatal conditions. One of these viruses is Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy and it is better known as PML Virus and is one of the dangerous brain diseases. Here in this article, we are going to throw light on PML Virus in more detail along with its treatment through herbal medicine.

What is Pml Virus?

Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy is a rare but fatal viral disease that is mostly characterized by the progressive inflammation of white matter present in the brain. The white matter present in the brain helps in protecting the nerves and the damage can lead to difficulty in moving, feeling, thinking, etc.  It is caused by the JC Virus which is harmless but not in the cases of people who have a low immune system. The mortality of survival is 30 to 50 percent and those who survive can suffer from some degree of neurological disability.  It is also seen in patients who suffer from Acquired immune deficiency syndrome or people who take immunosuppressive medications.

The symptoms take almost weeks or months in developing depending on the damaged location of the brain. Here are the common clinical features seen in the disease including

Complications

In some of the cases, the patient might suffer from severe health problems like Seizures, Coma, and Dementia

What Causes Pml Virus?

The main cause of the disease is not known but here are some factors that can lead to PML including

1. JC Virus Infection

One of the causes of PML is the type of polyomavirus also known as JC virus which was initiated after the name of the person John Cunningham. From this person, it was the first time that the virus was detected from the tissue. It has been recently published that 40 to 58 percent of people have been diagnosed seropositive for the antibody of JCV. Most of the patients with this virus remain asymptomatic and one-third of the patients shed the infection urine or suffer from a kidney infection.

2. Multiple Sclerosis medications

Natalizumab was first approved in 2004 by the FDA for the treatment of multiple sclerosis. There are some cases that are directly linked to the cases of ML and over 130 cases have been reported recently. Another one is Fingolimod which was approved in the year 2010 by the FDA for Multiple Sclerosis. The first case of PML was noted in the year 2015 where the patient was going through treatment.

3. Low Immunity

PML is very commonly seen in patients who suffer from HIV1 infection virus even after taking antiretroviral therapy. It is mostly seen that 5 percent of people eventually develop PML if they are suffering from AIDS. The cause for this is not known yet but it is caused due to the immunosuppressive condition. Some of the studies have shown that HIV puts a negative impact on the tissues of the brain. It is one of the causes that activates the JCV virus, leading to increased inflammation of the brain and damaging it.

How Pml Virus Can Be Diagnosed?

PML is mostly diagnosed in the patient who has already progressed the disease and some of the clinical diagnosis that can be done are

1. Blood Test

It will help in diagnosing the JC Virus antibody and the high levels confirm the diagnosis.

2. Imaging Test

CT scans and MRI can help in detecting the lesions present in the white matter of the brain. In PML patients multiple lesions can be easily seen.

3. Lumbar Puncture

Spinal fluid is also one of the ways to detect the virus.

4. Brain Biopsy

In this, the tissue is removed and examined to know the level of infection.

Treatment of Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy

According to modern science, the main treatment for the disease is increasing immunity. This is done through the help of giving chemotherapy and this leads to many other side effects on the body. One of the ways is plasma exchange which is done through blood transfusion. There is no such treatment that can remove the root cause of the disease.

According to Ayurveda, PML can be correlated with Hina Pitta Madhya Kaph Vatadik Sannipatak jwara where the commonly seen symptoms are Tremors, headache, delirium, and many more. The herbal medicine will help in removing the root cause of the disease and along with that, it will effectively remove the symptoms.
