Natural Remedies for Optic Neuritis
Optic nerve is your vision messenger, which sends the messages from eyes to brain. What happens when this nerve gets inflamed? Well, that condition of inflamed optic nerve is known as optic neuritis. It is usually seen as a repercussion of a nerve disease or an infection. This inflammation typically happens in only one eye and usually causes temporary loss of vision and some may even experience pain. As the inflammation subsides, the vision becomes clear. Usually it takes 2 to 12 months for a complete recovery.
The apparent cause of optic neuritis is still under investigation and most often it is evident with multiple sclerosis. Perhaps, optic neuritis may be the first symptom seen in multiple sclerosis, as ON can also be caused by inflammatory immune system response. A part from multiple sclerosis, other nerve diseases like Schilder’s disease (chronic demyelinating disease that begins in childhood itself) and neuromyelitis optica can also cause optic neuritis. An auto immune disease called as Guillain Barre Syndrome where the immune system attacking the own nervous system can also cause optic neuritis.
Optic Neuritis Is Also Found In Infectious Diseases Like
- Meningitis
- Viral encephalitis
- Tuberculosis
- Mumps
- Measles
- Sinusitis
- Shingles
- Lyme disease
The Major Symptoms Of Optic Nerve Include (أهم أعراض العصب البصري)
- Vision loss typically in one eye, which lasts for 7 to 10 days
- Periocular pain
- Inability to see colors correctly
- Seeing flashing lights in one or both eyes
- Vision worsens with an increase of body temperature
- Black outs and splinter hemorrhages
Ayurveda explains this scenario, as the aggravated dosha affecting the layers of eyes.
Siraabhirabhiprapyaviguaabhyantharebrisham //
Prathamepataledoshoyasyadrishtauvyavasthitha //
Avyakthanisaroopanisarvanyevaprapashyathi //
Drishtibrshamvihvalathidiwithiyampatamgathe //
(Susruthasamhitha, Uttarasthana, chapter 7, shloka 6 & 7)
The aggravated dosha travels to the vessels and nerves in the eye and gets localized in the first layer, making the vision hazy and it invades the second layer, the vision becomes greatly deranged. The prime dosha affected is definitely vata and it is very obvious that vata causes degeneration.
It is already apparent that ‘eyes are fiery’. As eyes have fire, they are dominant with Pitta and hence every eye diseases have connection with Pitta aggravation. Vata has stimulating ability and it stimulates Pitta causing inflammation in optic nerve.
So Ayurveda takes in consideration of both Vata and Pitta together in optic neuritis disease pathogenesis. Coolants and relaxants should be used for the management and one can even resort to Ayurveda eye care treatments.
