Ayurvedic Treatment for Heart Diseases
Heart disease or cardiovascular or cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death nowadays. It generally refers to conditions involving narrowing or blockage of blood vessels, leading to Chest pain, heart attack or stroke. They mainly occur due to conditions like – High blood pressure, diabetes, intake of alcohol and depression. Heart disease can cause complications like – Myocardial infarction, heart attack, and heart failure. Diseases that fall under heart disease include – Blood vessel diseases like – Heart defects you are born with (Congenital heart defects), Coronary artery disease (CAD) and Heart rhythm problems (Arrhythmias).
Clinical Features of Heart Diseases
These can present with following signs and symptoms –
- Discomfort and pain in the arm, breastbone, and chest.
- Fluctuation in heartbeat.
- Difficulty in breathing.
- Fainting.
- Heartburn and indigestion.
- Discomfort and feeling of heavy pressure in the chest.
- Swelling in ankles, legs, and abdomen.
- Shortness of breath after normal activities.
- Drowsiness, vomiting, nausea, and sweating.
- Weakness in the whole body.

- Cough with white sputum.
- Myocardial infarction may occur in the case of diabetic patients.

Etiology of Heart Diseases
Heart diseases can occur due to many reasons and they can vary by the type of Heart disease, some of them are listed below –
- Congenital Heart Defects (Heart defects you are born with).
- Coronary Artery Disease (CAD).
- Valvular Heart Disease.
- Hypertension(High blood pressure).
- Diabetes.
- Stress.

Diagnostic Methods
Following are the diagnostic methods to diagnose the heart diseases –
- Electrocardiogram (ECG) – This technique uses the electrical signals to find out the variation of heartbeats.
- Echocardiogram (EEG) – In this technique ultrasound of chest is taken to observe structure and images of the heart.
- CT Scan –In this method, the patient lies on the table inside a machine which contains an x-ray tube to get the images of all the parts of the heart and chest.
- MRI Scan-In this method, images of heart structures are produced by the magnetic field.
- Holter Monitoring – This method is used to find out the heart irregularities which are not detected by ECG.
- Cardiac Catheterization –In this method a tube containing a dye is inserted into the artery or vein through arm or legend pressure on the heart is measured, X- rays images are formed on a screen which helps to find the complication in various parts of blood vessels and heart valves.

Classical Reference Regarding Arjuna(Terminalia Arjuna)

Meaning – This verse explains about various synonyms and properties and benefits of Arjunaterminalia. Various synonyms for Arjuna are – Arjun, kukumbh, veer, dhawal, veervariksh, and nadisarj. It is astringent in taste (kashaya rasa), cool in potency (sheet virya), useful in treating various diseases like – Diabetes (prameha), Kapha and pitta doshas, used to cure chest injuries (kshata), reduces cholesterol levels (medohara), treats chronic respiratory disorders (kshayhara) and is used as a cardiac tonic (Hridya).
- Bacopamonnieri –This herb is useful to control the high blood pressure in the body and is very beneficial to maintain better heart health.
- Withaniasomnifera – This herb helps to strengthen the heart muscles due to its excellent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.
Dosage – 1 Capsule twice daily with plain water, after meals.
2. Arjun Tea
Arjun tea is very beneficial in the treatment of heart diseases.
Composition and Benefits – It is the combination of various herbs like –
- Terminalia Arjuna –This herb helps to strengthen the heart muscles because it contains phytochemicals like – saponins, oxidants and gallic acid.
- Boerhaviadiffusa –This herb helps in the relaxation of heart muscles due to its rejuvenating and diuretic properties.
- Cinnamomumzeylanica –This herb helps to maintain the high blood pressure and cholesterol levels due to its excellent antioxidant properties.
Dosage- 1 Cup daily.
Direction for Use –Put 1 or 2 cups of water and 1 cup of milk in a pan. Add 1 teaspoon to 1 tablespoonful of Arjuna tea and stir the mixture. Now boil the mixture until it reduces to 1 cup and simmer it on low heat. Strain the tea with a tea strainer and add sugar if needed (drink without sugar). For good results, use 1 to 2 cups per day.
3. Arjuna Capsules
These are the herbal formulation by Planet Ayurveda which has excellent properties to treat heart diseases by maintaining high cholesterol and blood levels in the body.

Gotu Kola capsules are prepared from standardized extract of Mandukaparni (Centella asiatica).Gotu kola is frequently referred to as a longevity herb or the “fountain of life.” Gotukola helps to balance all three doshas: Kapha, Pitta, and Vata. It is said to be good in lowering excess kapha in the body, as well as soothing for pitta and calming for vata in the psyche.
